Description
One day I found a Chinese version of Cinderella. In this story, the heroine, Yeh-Xian (or Yeh-Hsien) despite living a life burdened with chores and housework, and suffering endless abuse at her stepmother's and stepsister´s hands, finds solace when she ends up befriending a beautiful, 10-foot-long (3.0 m) fish in the lake near her home, with golden eyes and scales. The fish was really a guardian spirit sent to her by her own mother, who never forgot her daughter even beyond the grave.

In this version, the fish makes her a beautiful dress made of gold and silk, and gives her a pair of golden slippers for her tiny feet.

Even when I have foun recently d that in the original version the dress is blue-green and she has a cape made of blue feathers, I always pictured the dress as a mermaid-sy, flowing garment, complete with little golden-fish-like slippers.
