Personality

Confident | Forthright | Loyal | Adaptable | Breezy | Witty | Irreverent | Sarcastic | Blunt | Impulsive | Willful

Finley is a very outspoken, straightforward girl. She's very much secure in her sense of self; while she knows she's far from perfect, she doesn't agonize over her flaws, but accepts them as part of who she is while still working to improve them, which makes her somewhat more emotionally stable and clear-thinking than many girls her age. She speaks her mind, for better or for worse, and doesn't bother trying to please everyone. It isn't that she's unfriendly, but she doesn't see the need to burn herself out trying to keep everyone happy with her - if someone doesn't like her, that's their problem, as far as she's concerned.

When Finley does grow close with people, there's almost nothing she wouldn't do for them. She considers her friends to be practically family, and she's the most reliable and trustworthy friend you could ask for, even if she isn't the most sweet-natured. Still, she's normally easygoing and flexible, and quick with compliments and encouragement.
She's good at rolling with the punches, which is a large part of what keeps her so steady. She's extremely difficult to get dejected, even in the face of a tough situation, and usually has a few quips and jokes at the ready to try and lighten everyone's mood. Still, she doesn't put up with other people's crap if they're being rude or unfair. Unfortunately, this can lead to some rudeness on her own part.

Although her candid nature can be an asset, Finley's lack of verbal restraint does as much harm as good more often than not. While she's difficult to dishearten, annoyance is another matter; when something manages to tick her off, she shows no mercy. She's capable of making incredibly acerbic and caustic remarks when something rubs her the wrong way, and something she sees as particularly wrong will keep her bitter for hours. Authority figures aren't safe from her snappish comments either; she's gotten in trouble more than once for "sassing" teachers when they do things like punish students for arbitrary reasons. She doesn't typically apologize for her behavior, either, since she only does this when she firmly believes the other party is in the wrong.

Her free-thinking and independent way of moving through life can also push too far into overconfidence and impulsiveness; while she isn't typically outright reckless, she can become somewhat incautious and fail to think through the consequences of her actions if she doesn't check herself. When she decides she wants something, she's very difficult to turn away, even if pursuing the subject in question might not be what's best for her.

Background

Finley was born in Canada to a Scottish father and French-Canadian mother; she was the youngest of three siblings in a lower-class area of Toronto. Most of her childhood memories are of running around their small apartment, being dragged along on various troublemaking adventures by her two older brothers. She was, somewhat surprisingly, a fairly quiet child, and was mostly happy to accompany her siblings on whatever sidewalk game they wanted to play with the other neighborhood kids.

Since they spent so much time out of the house, Finley was blissfully unaware of the state of her parents' marriage until she was around nine and her mother sat her down and explained that her father was filing for a divorce. She didn't exactly understand the reason until later - her parents had married too young and too quickly, and had simply turned out to be a bad match - bad enough that even their three children weren't enough to hold them together. This seemed perfectly understandable when she was thirteen (her father had never been especially loving in any case, looking back on it), but at nine years old all it meant was that she was being ripped away from her home and school friends.

Over the next period of months, Finley's mother filed for and won full custody of the children, and promptly moved them all to the United States to pursue a job opportunity with the company she worked for, in a moderately-sized city called Silverthorne. While now ten-year-old Finley was reluctant to leave her friends at home behind, she reasoned that at least she still had the company of her brothers. And though the family couldn't afford a home anywhere but Silverthorne's Lower City, it was still a step up from the run-down apartment in Toronto.

As the next few years passed, however, she and her brothers grew apart somewhat, as siblings sometimes do; they were no longer the close-knit trio they once were, and Finley hadn't made many friends at her new school, despite the decent amount of time she had been there. Her mother, though busy with her new (and thankfully well-paying) job, noticed Finley's dejection and encouraged her to socialize and make more friends.

Although it was well-meaning, this advice eventually lead to trouble for Finley. Convinced that her something-of-a-loner status was somehow disappointing her mother, Finley fell in with a rather bad crowd of students (or as bad as one might expect from a middle school setting). They were reasonably nice to her, she thought, and that was better than no friends at all, right?
Still not out of her shell, Finley simply went along with whatever they wanted to do; while none of it was illegal, per se, there were a fair number of dubious antics going on after nightfall, involving things like hopping over or climbing under fences and sneaking around in restricted areas. Her new "friends" were well aware of what a pushover she was, and often sent her on the riskiest dares, knowing she wouldn't dare refuse.

One such dare, which she remembers only in a blur of blind panic and distant, mocking laughter, led to her nearly drowning in a Central City pond one night. She was incredibly lucky that she didn't suffer any ill effects afterwards, given that she neglected to seek medical help for fear of repercussions. Her mother never found out, but must have had her suspicions - after that night, her daughter had a deep, abiding fear of deep water, was refusing to ever speak to or even discuss her friends again, and had a sudden and fervent resolve to never let anybody push her around ever again.

For her last two years of middle school, Finley Seymour became practically a different person. Anybody who tried to bully her into anything received an aggressive verbal lashing of epic proportions; she became outgoing, blunt, and - strangest of all - didn't appear to care what others thought of her. By the end of seventh grade, word had spread around not to mess with her, and while her abrupt transformation didn't quite bring people flocking to her, she didn't feel she needed it to. She was happier with who she was now, and the friends she did have actually cared about her, which was more than enough by her standards.

While middle school ended relatively happily for her, she still wanted to shake off the last of her old life. As high school approached, she turned her eyes to the boarding school up the hill - Academia di Fiori. It seemed to her like the perfect opportunity to get a truly fresh start, although she was vaguely surprised when she received the invitation to an interview.

She took the news about magic and Shades and Fauna in stride; she'd always had a niggling hope that magic might be real, although she could've done without the evil grimy soul-sucking monsters. Still, it wasn't even a question for her whether or not to accept the Faunas' offer - she could fight for humanity and protect the world from evil - what better high school experience could you ask for? Y'know, as long as her mother didn't find out.
And hey, Shades - finally, something she could get super salty about and not be questioned for it!
Well, granted, it was mostly the protect-humanity part that appealed to her. But shhh.

Since her arrival as a Seedling, Finley has adjusted well to the atmosphere of the Academy. The students are much nicer, for the most part, than the ones from her middle school days (which she looks back on, predictably, with disgust and vague embarrassment). She's not quite as aggressive anymore as she was in the latter part of middle school; life at the Academia has calmed her down a lot, though not completely. She started expanding on her drawing hobby, as well, which she started in Toronto when she was very young but dropped after the move. Overall, she's settled quite nicely into the magical and social environment of the school.

((laughs @ long freaking wall of text backstory im so sorry))

Trivia

Voice: Kate Covington don't mind the visual part of the video on the second link it's just i thought this one got the voice across really well;;

She has very fluid, graceful movements and excellent balance, especially on the battlefield.

She spends a lot of time in the fine arts wing of the academy; if she's not there in her free time, she's in the courtyard and gardens, working on some drawing or another. She enjoys it mostly because it keeps her mind and hands busy, and because she finds it rewarding; it's more of a hobby than a passion, though.

She doesn't care much for coffee, and there's only a few kinds of tea she enjoys. She gets by without caffeine, for the most part.

She likes to hum and sing while she works on things, though she's not always doing it consciously.

Magical Information

Class: Combattenti

Flora: Pink magnolia

Fauna: Finley's Fauna, which she named Libra, has picked up on her outgoing and free nature; as such, it tends to get up to even more trouble than the average Fauna. Still, the two of them have a strong affection and an understanding between them that Libra won't do anything too out of line, and Finley won't leave it alone in the Fauna daycare.

Weapon: A bow featuring two blooming magnolias on either side of the grip. The string glows with pink light when it's in use.

Powers
Finley's abilities revolve around the use of her bow and arrows. She can summon arrows for use in combat, with varying levels of intensity; for non-magical attacks, she can summon and fire an ordinary arrow (pictured to the left). When she's using more powerful, magical attacks, she summons arrows that seem to be made of pink light (pictured to the right). If she puts enough power into the arrow (i.e. a critical hit), it may explode into a sharp burst of light on contact with the target and cause burns.
