Personality

Quiet | Practical | Focused | Kind | Poised | Single-minded | Impatient | Paranoid | Cynical

Juliet has never been the most talkative person; she's not shy, precisely, and by no means antisocial, but she likes to keep her thoughts to herself. That said, when she does get into a conversation, she's unfailingly courteous and sometimes a bit formal. She's very soft-spoken and hardly ever raises her voice; she maintains a calm and unruffled exterior at virtually all times. This isn't to say she doesn't have a sense of humor; it's just a rather quiet one, slipping out occasionally in the form of a witty comeback or play on words.

She has a very kind and almost motherly disposition; she cares deeply about people and can't stand seeing them upset. She'll do anything she can to cheer someone up, especially if they happen to be a friend. She also does have a more frivolous and carefree side, one that typically comes through in her choice of reading or when she's shopping.

When it comes to her goals and passions, she's incredibly driven and focused; once she decides on a goal, she'll throw her whole heart and soul into making it a reality, which can be something of a double-edged sword. Her determination alone gets her through many tribulations, but it also makes her failures all the more soul-crushing when they happen. She gets frustrated easily, not only with herself or others but with things like waiting in line. She does her best to push her impatience down, but isn't typically very successful.

She's very hard on herself and places a lot of her self-image in how well she can do at anything she tries, a habit she knows is unreasonable but can't quite distance herself from. Similarly, she cares a lot about what others think of her, and is constantly second-guessing her own statements and actions, worried that they might make people dislike her. She's actually quite pessimistic and tends to instantly jump to the worst-case scenario, but she hides all this behind her serene outer shell. Sometimes a scrap of her negativity and anxiety will slip out, each episode of which only expounds her fears that others will start to hate her.

Background

Juliet was born to lower-middle class parents in Versailles, France. Her French father and Peruvian mother got along well and cared deeply about her; fighting in the household was rare, although money was occasionally tight. Even back then, Juliet had a quiet and unassuming presence, and while she wasn't exactly short on friends, her parents still worried about how withdrawn she was and encouraged her to find some kind of interest. They presented her with a variety of activities they thought she might enjoy, including chess, soccer, crochet, and weaving, but nothing really stuck until her mother took her to see a ballet performance when she was four. Juliet was absolutely enamored with the music and dance, and thus began a love of the performing arts that would become the center of her life.

Her parents enrolled her in ballet lessons as soon as they were sure she would stick with it, and she grew very good very quickly. Nothing had caught her interest quite like ballet before, but now that she had a passion at last, it became apparent how driven she was. Her mother and father were thrilled, of course, and supported her interest as well as they could safely afford.

When she was about six years old, she and her parents moved to the United States to pursue a business deal her father had been offered. She had been taught English alongside French as she grew up, so the language switch didn't bother her too much, but uprooting and moving to an entirely different country so suddenly was a tad difficult, to say the least. She was homeschooled for a time, since the family moved frequently enough for the first few years that they would be enrolling her in a school only to take her out of it after less than a year. Still, they were careful to move to cities that had dance schools; her ballet, at least, was the same in both France and America, and her parents were aware that it was what was keeping her grounded in her life as well as where she made most of her friends.

At last, when she was about ten, they settled in a small town just outside of a city called Silverthorne. Her father's business situation was stable enough that he felt comfortable finally enrolling her in a public school. This town was where she won her first ballet competition, and she tried children's theater as well before deciding it wasn't for her. Her grades weren't stellar, but she kept up a decent GPA and got involved with the swim team as she entered middle school. The family was better off money-wise as well; the business deal had been a success, and while they were not wealthy by any means, they could afford more luxuries and more investment in Juliet's ballet; Juliet, in turn, began winning more competitions and gave the cash prizes to her family.

Unfortunately, not everything was sunshine and roses; while she got along fairly well with the students at her school, she was starting to learn how cutthroat the world of ballet could be, even for young performers. When she was twelve, she met a girl named Rose at a competition and quickly made friends with her. The two got along well and met frequently at competitions and rehearsals, and although she would later deny it to herself, Juliet developed a small crush on her.
At one point, immediately before a high-stakes competition, Juliet found her pointe shoes in a dressing room with the lacing cut apart and ruined. She was crushed, of course, and went looking for Rose to tell her what had happened, only to overhear her friend snickering with somebody else about what a great idea "messing up that Juliet chick's shoes" was.
That was one of the few times Juliet ever raised her voice, and there were more than a few tears; while Rose was kicked out of the competition for sabotaging another contestant, there was no time to get a new pair of shoes, let alone break them in, and Juliet was forced to forfeit. This incident was where her insecurity began regarding others' opinion of her; she had thought she and Rose were friends, but Rose had clearly hated her; who was to say others couldn't pretend just as well? Had she done something wrong? She started to constantly police her own actions, terrified that her friends would turn on her the way Rose did if she said the wrong thing. While this fear eased somewhat over time, the nagging anxiety remained.

Shortly after her graduation from eighth grade, the high school she had been planning on attending announced that it was going to be merging with another school; her parents, who had been considering moving Juliet to a different school anyway, took this as a cue to start seriously looking at other options for school. It was Juliet herself who suggested the Academia di Fiori in nearby Silverthorne; she had seen their dance team in a competition once and was deeply impressed by what she saw. It came with an excellent reputation, she pointed out to her parents, it was close by, and better yet, it was free. It didn't take much convincing, and before too long she was sitting before the Headmistress, being told magic was real and that she would have to either fight for humanity or leave. She wasn't all that shocked by the existence of magic - had always vaguely hoped for it, in fact, but goodness, it wasn't exactly coming about in any way she had imagined.

Still, it was an easy decision. Really, what was she supposed to do if she said no? Go back home and pick a different school in safety while all these girls kept on fighting? Even if she didn't remember anything about it, the problem wasn't just going to stop existing. Leaving would be showing willful ignorance on her part, and willful ignorance was something she wanted no part of, danger notwithstanding.

Since she entered the school as a Seedling, Juliet has acclimated quickly to the magical environment of the school. She genuinely enjoys the magical training and adores her Fauna, which she named Lyric. Even the regular classes are tolerable, if a little difficult, and overall she's settled in well over the past year.

Trivia

She's an excellent cook.

She has a very sharp sense of smell.

She's allergic to peanuts, but hasn't had a reaction since she was four.

Thanks to her training as a ballerina, her balance is impeccable.

She's on both the dance team and the swim team.

She can speak English and French, and learned a small amount of Spanish from her mother.

She plays the flute.

Magical Information

Class: Guaritori

Faction: Peonies

Flora: Queen Sophia marigold

Fauna: Juliet's Fauna, Lyric, has picked up some of her quiet and composed nature. It still gets up to a certain amount of mischief, but for the most part it's relatively calm and well-behaved. Lyric has a tendency to doze off a lot, but Juliet doesn't mind and they work well together.

Weapon: A magical stylus, about ten inches long. The marigold bud at the end blooms and emits a golden glow when it's in use.

Powers
Juliet's healing abilities are focused around the summoning and manipulation of sunlight. Her stylus, when activated, can sketch out thin, ribbon-like strands of concentrated light in the air, which can then wrap around and heal people or form into a (somewhat weak) shield. When pressed, she can snap the threads at an opponent like a whip, but to do this the threads need to be given physical form; this takes away their fundamental magic and leaves them weak and largely ineffective.
