'What have I done?' She thought to herself over and over. Every waking moment and every dream had turned into a nightmare of that night when the Bloody Flanks had raided that herder camp. Aubrey had seen fighting and spilled blood before. She was not new to pain and suffering nor was she naive to the feeling of her flesh being torn and sliced for the pleasure of another. What bothered her so badly was the haunting memory of her war-hammer coming down on that young mare's leg. The feeling of her bone breaking into thousands of pieces made her feel ill, and along with that sickened feeling, Aubrey felt an overwhelming weight of guilt.

Aubrey had been spending more and more time alone away from her clan, flying to tops of cliffs and hilltops to overlook the land she called home and wallow in the thoughts and emotions that swarmed inside of her. She felt as though she had no one to talk to. Surely no one in her clan would understand why she was feeling so badly about doing something she had to do in order to survive. They would simply tell her that Valkyrie mare would have killed her if she hadn't shattered her leg, and to that, Aubrey had no arguments. What she couldn't shake, however, was the feeling of the cold metal that served as her prosthetic leg and how, due to her actions, that young mare would probably be feeling this same cold, detached replacement for her own missing limb.

Aubrey's entire existence had been full of hate and abandonment. She'd never had anyone truly love her... she'd always been the odd one out... an ugly duckling. She had spent the majority of her life belittled and abused by those around her. She'd been given to a stallion for a measly amount of money, and she had been a false sense of love and adoration from him until she failed to birth him a child. All Aubrey had wanted in life was to be strong and independent or a mare other horses could look up to. That had been part of her reason to join the Bloody Flanks: to give the mares of War-Forged that shared her past experiences that there was hope for change and that they didn't need to feel hurt or beaten. Yet, Aubrey had done the unthinkable. She had possibly ruined that mare's life and given her a fate similar to her own. She had been the one to hurt her even though her life's mission was to do the opposite.

What did this mean for her? Aubrey had begun to feel as though everything she had done so far had been for nothing. She was just a lonely mare in a stallion's world with no cause except revenge on the people that had made her this way. A sorrowful sigh escaped her as she looked down toward the ocean where her clan's camp sat. She had some serious reevaluations to do, but Aubrey knew one thing for certain. She would stop at nothing to keep her clan safe... even if it meant hurting someone else.
