Yōkai are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits, and demons in Japanese folklore. Examples included the faceless ghosts Noppera-Bo, the Kyōkotsu is a yokai that hides in wells and curses anybody who approaches, the famous Jorogumo are yokai’s that take the form of a beautiful women who are also part spider and are practically the Japanese version of a Succubus, then there’s another famous yokai known as the Kappa which are reptilian creatures with magical abilities that steal the souls of the living… through their anuses… today we’ll be focusing on these two popular yokai’s;

Battle of the Yokai’s!

Mizore Shirayuki – one of the few main characters in Rosario + Vampire. There was once a normal high school boy named Tsukune Aono who couldn’t get into any private school due to his dismal grades. He finally manages to get into a school thanks to a form his father found on the street and got accepted. It turns out upon Tsukune’s arrival that this school was Yokai Academy, a secret school for monsters and other mythical creatures disguised as humans. Tsukune thought he was in literally hell until he made some friends or in actuality a monster harem; his first girl and main love interest is Moka Akashiya who is a vampire, Kurumu Kurono a Succubus, little Yukari Sendo who is a Witch, and the girl who we’ll be going over today is Mizore Shirayuki. Mizore is a Yuki-Onna aka a Snow Woman, in Japanese Folklore Yuki-Onna’s have many different variations; some say they’re spirits who died in blizzards, some are snow vampires, help lost travelers or lure weak willed men to drain or freeze them through sex or a kiss. Snow Women in Rosario + Vampire freeze lone travelers during snow storms and abduct males they like since Snow Women lose the ability to become pregnant at a very young age. Mizore before meeting Tsukune was a lonely, depressed and misunderstood girl who confessed her love to her teacher Okuto Kotsubo. Okuto began to take advantage of her but Mizore freezes him and runs away. Planning revenge, Okuto frames Mizore when two boys got injured in order to expel her and after revealing to be a Kraken when his plan fails tries to kill her. With the help of Tsukune and everyone they defeat Okuto and prove Mizore’s innocents. From this point throughout the series Mizore is one of the many girls that falls for Tsukune and protects him when trouble comes about. Being a Yokai of ice, Mizore possesses control ice, snow, and can drop to subzero temperatures. She is also able to withstand cold environments that humans and other monster species cannot easily tolerate. Mizore can create and summon ice at will, she can freeze and control any form of water. She can create anything she wishes like ice clones, ice walls, instant snow stroms, and her usual form of attacking ice claws and ice projectiles like daggers & kunai knives with great accuracy without fail (often hits foreheads… jesus). When using her power at full capacity her hair turns into ice. She is trained in unarmed combat thanks to her training with a perverted werewolf, this training lets her both wound and freeze her enemies at the time. Another thing to point out about Mizore is that she’s, a stalker… because of this she’s become very stealthy and can hide anywhere from anyone (she once appeared from the ceiling from out of nowhere). Due to their mutual rivalry with Moka, Mizore and Kurumu develop a partnership and work together in combination attacks in order to defeat Moka to win Tsukunes heart (wonder if the thought of them eventually fighting each other came to mind?). While this seem stupid it shows Mizore is both a main and support type fighter. In her quest for Tsukunes love her Ice Claws are so sharp they are like Kurumu’s who can slice through multiple trees like a knife through butter, has defeated powerful monsters both singlehandedly and as a team like a nine tailed fox and a Cerberus to name a few, at one point nearly kills Moka and vampires are one of the most powerful monsters in the series, is unaffected against water-based attacks, and can move faster then the human eye plus good reflexes to boot. Mizore may be the ultimate stalker ice ninja but what’s ice not good against? Fire, anything heat related leaves her vulnerable and dampens her powers drastically. Mizore bests attacks also rely on her teammates and the lollipop she always has? It’s actually a sucker that keeps her body cool so if she loses it and the heat around is immense, she won’t melt be she’ll still be screwed.

Hime Yarizakura – main protagonist in the Yozakura Quartet series. In Japan there is a town called Sakurashin Town where yokai and humans live alongside each other. The town is protected by a barrier created by the spiritual sakura known as The Seven Pillars. The Seven Pillars exist in both the human world and the yōkai world and is the only thing that keeps both worlds connected to each other. However, recent bizarre incidents have occurred in their town and someone has threatened the safety of the town. In the town there is a department called the Hiizumi Life Counseling Office that specialize in helping and protecting the townspeople of Sakurashin. The office is run by a group of teenagers who each have a unique ability. One of these teens, and the mayor of Sakurashin is the Dragon Yokai; Hime Yazirakura. Hime since she was a little girl was trained in the ways of combat and to act as future mayor by her grandmother. Hime as a dragon yokai held tremendous power and after her grandmother was sent to the yokai realm she became the mayor at the age of 9. Thanks to her Yokai Physiology, she has enhanced strength, agility, and durability. Hime is able to leap from building to building like a ninja and land at great heights without getting injured. She can deflect bullets by literally bitch slapping them, can heal faster then normal humans can and can run faster then cars. Hime is also able to access the Dragon Pulse, an energy emitting from Earth. Hime can use and manipulate this energy in various ways to enhance her abilities; she can manifest a spear of energy, can summon the Dragon Pulse to shoot out of the ground like an eruption, can absorb the Dragon Pulse to enhance parts of her body and even climb on flat surfaces like Spider-Man, and with this energy she can summon her Dragon Spear that her grandmother once wielded and trained in the ways of the spear. Hime is crazy strong as she can jump over buildings, block and send giant yokai’s of different sizes flying, onced held a falling floor with one hand, sent three building sized yokai lizards flying with her dragon spear, was fast enough to dodge a bullet and dash to the shooter after the bullet was fired, blocked a punch from a giant when her powers were restrained, got smashed through several floors and got back up, broke through the seal that restrained her powers, and is able beat her friend Kotoha in a fight who is a half-yokai that has the power to manifest any object and force simply by saying it (she’s crazy like walls, grenades, tanks, wrecking balls, trap doors, a German Army FLAK 36 88 mm cannon, and even fictional items). Hime is not only a powerful Yokai but a wonderful mayor. Her weaknesses are kind of hard to point out, while the Dragon Pulse makes her stronger, she’s already strong as it is without it. The only thing I can think of is that she can be a bit clumsy when using her spear, since her scarf is so long, she sometimes trips on it when performing spinning techniques.
