"Crap. Here comes Little Miss Hall Monitor," groaned Cindy, popping her gum."May as well pack up," said Steve. "Too bad. Hypnosis was a cool idea."
Tara stood uncomfortably, outlined in the doorway.
"Chill, everyone. Tara's here to play," Paul said.
She shuffled inside, conscious of everyone's stares.
"HER?"
"The same squealer who told on us for lighting fires, back in junior year?"
"Relax," soothed Paul. "She's changed. Right, Tara?"
She choked. "Um…"
"You've read about hypnosis, right? And you're OK with it?"
She tried a smile. "Yeah, um… everyone knows it can't make anyone do things they don't want, so… I'm curious to…"
"Great! Tara's in, OK? Now, get back in the circle."
Everybody resumed kneeling positions around Paul's little table. He waved Tara in, extinguished the lights and lit a thick, scented candle.
"Focus your attention on the flame, and listen to my voice."
Trying to ignore how much her dress and haircut stood out, Tara concentrated on the fire.
It danced beautifully.
Floating.
Vulnerable.
Fascinated.
"Awaken, but remain in trance."
Rising…
… reawakening…
… alarmed!
Tara panted. Her eyes boggled. She couldn't move.
The circle had gaps. Half the participants remained, kneeling obediently. Only the girls.
Male laughter. Tara hyperventilated.
"Shhhhhh…"
… relaxing…
"It's OK…"
… soothing…
"You're safe…"
… trusting…
"Tara… remember our sophomore field trip… when EVERYONE snuck out skinny-dipping… except you?"
… visualising…
"How did that make you feel?"
… unwanted…
"Remember how you ran away, crying?"
… sadness… pain…
"Don't you wish you could be fun, like the others?"
She cried.
"Shhhh… you're beautiful… and sleepy… just like them… go deeeeep…"
Tara closed her eyes.
Obedience.
Deepening.
Togetherness.
Significant deepening later…
"That's enough. Open your eyes."
Each girl complied, dizzily.
"All together, girls: STRIP NAKED!"
Everyone was doing it, right?
She had to. Wanted to.
Tara undressed.
It felt…
