Description Starcraft 2: Protoss Mothership
Model by Robb Shoberg and Phill Gonzales, final texture by Ted Park!
Animated by Allen Dilling

Although the abilities and in-game design changed several times on the Mothership, the art was only significantly revised once. After the initial creation and some minor proportion adjustments, it stayed unchanged for a few years (which is amazing for a Starcraft 2 unit). When we did our final art pass on the Mothership before shipping Starcraft 2, it was mainly to make smoother surfaces and more distinct objects thanks to the improved polycounts.

I really have only ever had one question about this thing. Just what are those small disks floating around it? It all looks awesome and technological but those disks... just mystify me.

I doubt it. We will probably get a better understanding of the Protoss themselves and perhaps how some of their devices work (maybe) but I wouldn't have my hopes dead set on that.

Looks badass but, the mothership has always rubbed me the wrong way. Instead of getting a brand new badass unit we effectively get the arbiter all over again with the exception that we can only have one.

I would have much preferred the Independence Day-esque death machine that we saw initially. I can understand nerfing that a bit, but keeping the spirit of that would have been preferable to the simple replacement unit.

I agree with you, the bummer is we have to tune everything to be balanced before we get to have over the top crazy abilities. The first showings of the Mothership had so much more zazz!

I mean I really liked the planet crack ability because it was so much like the awesome Czar experimental from Supreme Commander. Likely wouldn't have the sheer power of that unit due to game balance, but thankfully in SC2 you don't have to worry air crashes.

"Yeah! We killed the giant enemy spaceship......while it was over my army." And then gravity happened.

I don't know if you had any part in the Mothership Core but I just want to wish you congratulations that the Mothership has become even more refined and remains in the game. I am still giving myself more time to warm up to the Tempest. It seems less goofy now that it has been scaled down.

Thanks for the Mothership love! I didn't work on the core, but I agree with you that it's good to see that unit remain in-game.

Also, quite glad to hear that the Tempest scaling helped!

I like the original attack plumes better than the lasers. Other than that I think the design is a masterpiece. I love how the design reflects the design of the Nexus. The squid arms remind me of the arms of the old Nexus. The Nexus is a pyramid with 4 corners and it is a stationary structure. I love how the mothership has 3 corners and it is mobile. It also reminds me of Japanese samurai iris: hanashobu. If this unit had wormhole ability I think that ability should be a cool down and not spent energy.

Thanks for such a observant post, it's impressive reading your appreciation for the artwork's fine details! The plumes were adjusted for readability I believe, they were just too distracting unfortunately.

One of the best looking units in the game, great job on this one.
However, I always wondered why did you guys nerfed it that much. Sure some of it's abilities were imbalanced (recalling the very first protoss gameplay video), and I know Starcraft 2 ain't a game of ,,one-man army units" either, but it should still has the power to win against a single battlecruiser/carrier... (even if it's mainly a caster unit)

"Superunits" scare the development team and with Starcraft 2 being to balance focused the Mothership had to be downplayed tremendously. I think now that the game has been out for a while we're beginning to see late game units used more often and we're evaluating new and more precise balance changes. I don't think the Mothership is quite finished yet, but it's getting closer...

It depends, sometimes we have a meeting and come up with lines, other times the writers are left to their own devices and deliver these gems...

The only other concern I have is creating 3d models, I have these intricate armor techs I'd love to see given life.

Main advice for models like these is they need to hold up at a distance. The details have to be subtile, that way it doesn't look busy from a distance but still has interesting shapes when viewed up close.
