My favourite aspect of the relationship between Javert and Valjean is how similar roots have given rise to two such contrasting characters. Reading into it, I realised that actually, their positions would have been almost polar opposites before Valjean fell into poverty and stole A LOAF OF BREAD (the bastard! D< DA LAWR IS NUT MOCKED!).
So. Young Jean Valjean encounters the child who will one day be Inspector Javert. He gives him bread. What do you mean dramatic irony?
Biro and watercolour. I still suck at small children...Javert should be 4 or 5 here at most.

Very nice! I like it! (Although I got the impression reading the book that Valjean was born into poverty. I mean, clearly things got dramatically worse around the time he stole that loaf of bread, but it had always been rough.)

I don't think he grew up in a jail cell, he was born in one... He wouldn't be kept in there. BUT still a good picture.

Not true. Right up until the mid-19th century, in Britain at least, it was pretty much taken as read that a child born to a female prisoner would generally grow up in prison until he was old enough to fend for himself. It was pretty inhumane, but better than just chucking infants out onto the street.
Trust me, I'm a Quaker. We know our prison reform.

Aw, Javert looks so adorable here! Even before meeting the Bishop, JVJ shows his saintly ways. I love the picture, the kids lo adorable.
