Description
Girvan Harbour and Ailsa Craig, south-west Scotland, pictured on a cloudy day in May.

Girvan is a small town and fishing port. It was a popular holiday resort for people from Glasgow but this has declined with the growth of cheap foreign travel. Ailsa Craig is the rocky outcrop in the distance. It is about ten miles (16Km) from the mainland and is formed from an ancient volcanic plug. The granite there is of very fine quality and was traditionally used for making curling stones.
