hello I am the craftsman who made this and it is not for sale nor due i own it anymore and the people/group who due own it cherish it very much . one like it would be extremely expensive and beyond the reach of most people ,im not try to be insulting but these types of horns are usually purchased by large groupsΒ  .you may note me if you wish to continue the conversation.

Thank you! Your work is great. I tried bone carving long time ago to very limited extent. I work on natural materials only. I make jewelry and knives, amateur. I am going to give a try to carving horn. Of interest, how do you pick your horns so you know there are two color layers? Don't meant to find out your particular trade secrets but just wondering.

Bonecarverpm In reply to Armycub2 [2013-07-14 19:17:19 +0000 UTC]

No trade secret really just understanding that most horn is slightly transparent and you can see into it. Also if you trim the wide end you get a cross section view and can see the layering colors at the top. Also a lot of understanding of the material, having looked at thousands of horn then carving them.

This is BEAUTIFUL! I got to go to a SCA event down there in Florida last year and I loved it! So far I've only had one sculpture class and we did a landscape relief lost wax cast aluminum, so I at least know how much time went into that one part.

it was a gift from a son to his father he commissioned it for his father at pennsic war a few years ago, but as to names i at the moment dont recall, sorry. The Sons mother i believe works in or for a University there.

Hi there. The horn of Trimaris was for me a very very large project that took about 1.5 months to complete, with well over 300 hours of design and labor. The horn includes 12 carved bone inlays, numerous real pearls,8 lapis lazuli stones and 4 star Sapphires inlayed into it, with a white bronze end cap. If your friend wanted a horn equivalent to this piece it would cost a lot of money ,many thousands of dollars.

Each horns cost is based on the size of the horn you want carved. The complexity of the designs carved into it, if you want any bone inlays included into the design, what kind if any precious or semi precious stones you would like inlayed into it. What kind, if any metal work you would like included on it. So you see a drinking horns cost can vary tremendously. a simple horn like the raven shot glass is about 200.00 and then it goes up from there.

I hope this has answered our question, should you wish to have me make a horn for you I don't ask for the entire cost of a horn to start the commission, i only require a 50% down payment, then upon completion the remainder of the commission cost. I try to be as reasonable as possible on price but the cost it mainly time and a complex project takes a lot of it.

be well, have fun and thanks for the comments

Thanks, you answered the question for sure!!! My friend (who is not on dA) loves wood and bonecarving, so I showed him your page. He started drewling almost immediately and wondered what time, material etc you put in there. Unfortunately we are both a little bit too poor too buy a piece like the horn of Trimaris, but it's always nice to know what it is worth.
Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation and when I win the lottery I will buy the horn for my friend!!!
You too have fun!!!

I actually got to hold this and examine it in person while at Pennsic last year. It is even more impressive than the photo can properly convey. I was only able to get a picture with my phone. I'm very glad to now know who the craftsman was who did the work. Absolutely fantastic workmanship!
