Description The coin is from Guatemala and was a part of my Grandma’s coin collection before she passed away. It's real silver. I inlayed it in rosewood treated with beeswax. The counterweight is copper and the bail is gold-plated.

Very nice! Did you use a rivet to attach the coin?

And I love working with rosewood, it's so smooth and files really nicely

How did you go about finding the appropriate placement to counterweight it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

salvagedsword In reply to Exxos [2010-03-01 00:52:46 +0000 UTC]

I chose the placement according to what was most aesthetically pleasing. The balance comes from the size that I cut the copper to.

it would be worth more than a buck if it is sliver if it is a oz it is worth at least 15 dollars and you might get more if you can find a collector that would be intersted it would depend on how how much silver is in the coin their not 100 per cent silver except for the U.S. silver eagles their .999 per silver, I'm a coin collector and silver is at 21.00 an oz right now

salvagedsword In reply to we-are-the-remnants [2010-03-01 00:51:16 +0000 UTC]

Well, the coin is much smaller than a dime and only .720 silver, so it's probably not worth very much apart from its sentimental value.

I though that picture was the actual size of the coin I was thinking it was a 1 oz coin, so it wouldn't have much value not with all the wear, i'll have to take some picture of some of my coins and put on here I have some old coins and some new coins if you would be interested.

Sweet. How did you get the coin to stick to the wood?

salvagedsword In reply to redbaron1234 [2010-03-01 00:55:28 +0000 UTC]

E-6000, an industrial strength glue that is much stronger than epoxy. Just be careful if you ever use it, because it is pure cancer in a tube.

Thanks.

Now... What's a bail?

salvagedsword In reply to redbaron1234 [2010-03-01 13:40:16 +0000 UTC]

A bail is a type of finding. Basically, it can be soldered or glued onto a pendant to give a cord a place to go through.

So it's the loop, and the counterweight is the other little metal doohickey? Right?

Lovely idea for a pendant. But you know that now although the personal value of the coin is very high, the market value of the coin now dropped since you modified it into a pendant. Ive been a coin collector for many years, and I dont often see this thing happen. Never the less, Im still impressed. Creativity at its best to honor your Grandmother. God speed.

I would like to see the other side of the coin. I like it better the ceiba pentandra than the coat of arms

salvagedsword In reply to aschrei [2010-03-01 00:58:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was a very tough decision. I ended up going with the coat of arms side because personally, I liked it a bit better, and also because it looked a bit better compositionally with the rest of the pendant.

This has a simple elegance that is hard to place. The offsetting of the coin in wood and the contrast between the bright silver and dark, rich rosewood is very appealing to the eye. The different metals don't clash with each other, they seem to subtly compliment on another. +fav

I like the idea, although in my opinion it would've been better to use one or 2 metals maybe, because it looks a bit messy to me.

anyway, congrats with the DD!

Neat. I like the contrast of silver and the deep reddish wood. I used a few coins from my grandmother's collection for a piece too. Not so fancy as this though
