Description Materials:
Copper and brass sheet, copper wire.
Black patina (surface color).
Clear Varnish (protects surface)

Size:
7/8โ€ diameter (2.25 cm)
About the size of a US nickel.

This pendant series started with the simple concept of recycling discarded scrap metal. Starting with scrap sheet, I cut disc and random shapes out. The scraps ultimately play a part in the finished look. Because these are produced from scrap, slight defects maybe present but do not take away from the feel. There maybe dings , deep scratches, or hammer textures that add to the surface pattern. Care is taken when working on the pieces design. I will spend time placing and rearranging the smaller scraps till I feel the design is interesting. Once the pieces are assembled together, I apply a patina to the surface of the metal. This brings out the depth and shape of the pendants. I then file and sand the the surface of the metal scraps to their original color. They are then hammered to a slight bowl shape. To reveal the textures created by hammer marks and scratches I will polish the surface slightly. The surface is then sprayed with a clear varnish that will protect the color and prevent the copper and brass from tarnishing.

There is something fascinating about hand crafted jewelry. The feel, look, and knowledge that someone hand made the piece adds a value that can not be duplicated in mass production.

Sold!

That's pretty cool... So, the raised brass elements are glued to the copper disk?

TallGuyKen In reply to Daemonworks [2010-03-31 12:42:43 +0000 UTC]

They are soldered to the disc.

How are the brass scraps attached to the copper disc? Did you sauder (sp?) them?

Congrats on the DD, this and your others are beautiful, the craftsmanship looks great, the designs are all really cool and a great versatile look for the styles I love. The contrast between the copper and the brass also gives it a really nice look. Your Etsy page is bookmarked and on the list for when I have some extra money to spend on myself.

I've had a couple of people question the size of a nickel reference. A couple of my friends stated that it might be because of the sketch book prop. The pendant in comparision to my handwriting may be misleading since I write very small. Just to give you an idea of how small the book is a 4*6" moleskin. About half the page is actually shown in the picture. All this combined with the macro setting on my camera makes it appear quite a bit larger than actual.

Oh, yes i see now. I do suppose the way it was taken could be misleading in a way. I like your hand writting by the way. You did an amazing job on this, and for such a small size it looks fantastic!

I agree. In an age of endless WalMart merchandise (did you know you can order COFFINS from them online now?), it's good to know you have something real and unique, something that wasn't made by underpaid foreign sweat-shop workers in a noisy factory somewhere across the ocean.

It's interesting how the pseudo-random origin of the design leads to something it is easy to read meaning into. My "this reminds me of" was a piece of D'ni jewelry -- probably because the text it was lying on reminded me of Atreus' journal.

Thanks!

A lot of people feel that it resembles something they've seen. even I look at it and wonder, but the whole piece is randomn bits and scraps picked for no particular reason at all.
