How is it you get the spirals and the horn itself so smooth glossy? I've been carving bone for a little over a year now but I just started carving horn. I'm finding that sanding only goes so far and I'm not able to get the horn to return to its previous luster. Any suggestions?

scrape with a curved scraper in the flutes till ALL of the tool markes are gone, then sand the horn while wet, sand with 220 wetdry sandpaper then 400 grit then buff it on a very clean buffing wheel with white diamond buffing compound that how i do it. you may have to scrap or sand places several times till you get all the tool marks out, its not a once through process. Its very easy to miss stuff polishing it brings every scratch out that you missed

a wood scraper or a shaped piece of thin metal with a burr on the egde, what ever you find does the job best for you is what should be used. Its the end results that matter, some processes just take longer then others. You should find that the time spent using the scraper will reduce your over all finishing time by a lot ,just in the time spent sanding you will notice a difference.

Very nice piece, I never knew just how much material there is for that type of horn.

the depth that i carve a piece is based on the thinnest section of the horn, which is usually at the lip, i dont go more then half of the thinnest area, i can go deeper as i go down the horn as it gets thicker until you hit solid towards the tip.
I will be getting you the answers to your note in a bit just been very busy.
