Description

[ Mantle | Earthclan Warrior | Learning to lavabend over 3 years | Word count: 1197 ]
"AHH!- God damnt!" A voice rang out from the depths of Earthclan's mines, interrupting the sizzling sound that came from the charred earth. This was the first couple of times the young warrior had attempted the age old skill. The skill to manipulate molten earth, and even phase change it into lava. While also controlling the lava in any which way he wanted. Hissing as he sucked in air through his teeth, cradling the burn in which the first ever sight of lava had caused him. Watching as his skin became mangled, the fur blistered away.
"Fuucckk, that hurt. Gods! That hurts." Mantle continued to complain, but eventually his golden orbs were drawn to the now smoking pile of rock. The lava he had created had hardened in magma once again. Why couldn't he do it! Then again, he had only started practicing. He figured out he could bend lava at random, while in the mines searching for diamond. He had ran into a pocket of lava, and in its wake he was able to swipe a paw sending it in the opposite path. Saving his life entirely- and also welcoming a new skill. But that was moons ago, and even now he could only move existing lava and magma. It was cool and all- but he wanted to be able to MAKE lava. Something he could only do for a couple of minutes or less. But he wouldn't give up. He would work vigorously, until he had mastered the skill.
Nobody knew until  2 years later that he even had the potential of lavabending. During a gathering in which Airclan started, he had gotten into a conversation of a metalbender of his clan; Pippin. The sleek black tom annoyed him to no end, but the molten tom kept a smile on his face as he played along with the absurd puns. But it was only recently was he able to make any progress in his efforts. But still he just could not produce actual lava. Only maintain its form for a set amount of time, but when it came to the pocket of lava he had stumbled upon in the mines. He was able to flex and twist it like any professional waterbender. Maybe even better. Despite not being able to create it, when he could, he was more then prepared for it.
Mantle crouched low next to the stream of lava that flowed in the core of the abandoned mines from generations ago. Many believed he was only in these parts to feed his greedy nature- but that was only half true. Here he was. Moving in fluid natures foreign to his clan's ways, raising columns of the burning liquid to touch the ceiling. Grinning as he compacted into a sphere, guiding it to sit infront of his paws. Bubbles of orange oozed from the white hot substance, the crackling of the boiling ball made him proud. He was able to control this.
Having studied the waterbenders that often took to the rapids, he mimicked them. Moving one paw in front of the other as the sphere turned to a whip, flexing his body to make the the lava circle around him. And with a flick of his wrist, the whip was sent flying at the wall and splashed against it. "Just wait until I can actually produce lava at any given time. I will be the best bender this clan has ever seen..." A frown slid onto his maw. "Hm, greatest or not. That doesn't change Earthclan's current leader's ways." Mantle added with a sigh. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts as he turned to a isolated rock. Nodding his head as it lifted into the air and traveled before his eyes, narrowing his eyes as it flattened. Compressed, and melted into a swirl of oranges and reds. White and yellow at the core- it boiled wildly and threatened to splatter against his fur. But he couldn't keep it for long. Instantly he dropped it and stepped back in fear as the lava ran towards him, but hardened back to a solid inches away from his paws.
"Damnt! I was so close..." He hissed again, banging his fist against the ground hard enough to cause the earth to crack under its force. Turning heel for the time being as he trotted out of the mines and back to camp, he would try again later. He was just overly frustrated and needed to clear his head- by no means was this him giving up. Over the next couple of weeks he refused to return to the pool of lava, instead he focused on getting pieces of rocks and melting them down. He would proudly admit to his sister he was getting better at it! Even showing Peridot what he could do, of course the golden bengal would know of her brother's motives. He came back to their burrow far to many times with treated burns for her not to know.
Months of intense training passed before the tomcat was able to finally produce lava- and actually keep it in that state. It was after the fight with Alpha Cobalt, he was able to test his skill during the fight and was actually happy with himself. Creating a mote of nothing but the sizzling stream of red and black. But it hardened after he allowed- willingly loosing his concentration to eye the Alpha. He will admit to the strange ways the snowshoe was acting, having licked him and even made a bet for the two. But that has nothing to do with this story, but it was days after. As the bet was neither of them could mock the other- this gave him lots of free time. As he tried to distance himself from camp in order to not see the snowshoe. He didn't want to tempt himself in teasing the childish leader.Returning to the mines, with a confident smile and flirtatious wink to the pool of boiling orange.
"I have returned my love, but look at what I can do now-" Mantle spoke to nobody. Though his words were directed to the lava. Don't ask, he had used the pool so many times it was like an ex-lover at this point. Sliding into a low crouch, the molten tom smirked before turning on his heels and flicking his tail against the earth below. Flipping back over to face the spot, which had melted into lava. Gold eyes glowed with the line of orange walking into the much larger pool. "I can make lava."
It was hard work and practice, but after that was done. He continued to work on the skill. Beating it into submission in order to master it. Soon, lavabending was nothing more then earthebending to him, which caused him to keep gems on his body at all times. When in battle, he could detach them and crush them into a firey shuriken of magma. Or even creating a mote around himself, controlling streams of the substance to splash at his opponent. He very well knew he could kill anyone instantly- but like a firebender he controlled death in his paws.
