Description The Black-Backed Jackal (Lupulella mesomelas), is a canine native to eastern and southern Africa. The Black-Backed Jackal is very lean with a long, thin body. The black backed jackal has a reddish-brown coat. The flanks and legs are redder than the rest of the body. Their underpants are white. Throughout the coat are a mix of silver and black hairs. At the end of the tail is a black tip. On the backs of the ears there is a thick patch of yellowish brown fur. The Black-backed jackals can be found in diverse habitats, living in coastal areas, deserts and mountains. They prefer dry areas, avoiding wetlands and swamps.

Diet and Nutrition: The Black-backed jackals are omnivores. Their diet includes carrion, domestic livestock, rodents, gazelle, hares, young ungulates, lizards, birds, insects as well as fruit and berries. In addition, jackals living in southern part of Africa can also eat cubs of fur seal.

Social: A pair of Black-backed jackals is a strong social unit: they closely cooperate, building shelter and finding food together.

Size: 15 to 19Β inches at shoulder height, 26.5 to 32 inches in length and weigh 15 to 30 lbs.
