what lens did you use for this ?

Bosaiya In reply to gak [2005-02-10 00:38:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! All of the true macro shots were done with a $150 100mm Vivitar lens, the cheapest thing I could find. Not that I was specifically looking for something cheap, but I couldn't afford what I really wanted so I got what would do for the time being.

Looks phenomenal! I've got to this!!
Good idea to put the light behind the bug, makes it translucent!

depth of focus is wonderfully done...
light as well...

which I like

Thank you! I used a flash behind and a small tungsten underneath. The exposure was roughly 1sec.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bosaiya In reply to diDjA [2004-11-26 14:42:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! It's a combination of mixed lighting/incorrect white balance and some desaturation in post. The light shifts everything towards the red-orange end and the desaturation dulls it down.

oh, pheNOMenal! I loved finding these husks hanging on the sides of trees.

Gorgeous colors, and I love how the lines of the background and floor-type-surface give it an almost modern look, and the subject is this antediluvian creature just born out of the primordial soup, so to speak. Nice nice nice!

Only critique I can think of is that it would've been nice to have the right border a little bit farther off the hindmost/rightmost leg, but not much...the balance is definitely correct to have it close there, I would say just not quite so absolutely close as it is now (ie, touching).

Gorgeous crispness! All the cilia are perfectly clear and distinct.

Thanks so much! The framing is actually off from what I had intended. The flash in back (the visible white box) was being held and triggered by hand, as was the shutter release with my other. I ended up bumping everything and it all came out "off", but I looked at it in the monitor and actually thought it had a nice feel. Of course I tried to duplicate that later and it never quite worked out the same.

Welcome! I read your artwork commentary, but didn't put it together that the surface the bug-suitcase was sitting on was itself bumped, I imagined as the bg...it came out marvelously well, thank goodness for grace and happy "accidents" (in quotes because I don't really believe in them as such). It *does* have a nice feel, very good, delicious creme soda tones.

Bosaiya In reply to iamshe [2004-11-26 20:53:10 +0000 UTC]

I hope some of them are truly accidents, because most of them turn out so poorly! What's really funny is that your comment threw me for quite a loop. In the background that you can't see in this shot is a... suitcase! I'll upload some more soon that you can clearly see it in, so I couldn't figure out how you knew.

Creme soda?!?! Eww! I'll never look at another bottle quite the same way again!

iamshe In reply to Bosaiya [2004-11-27 00:12:16 +0000 UTC]

Ah, but therein lies the gift and art of discernment...if it was *all* good, there'd be no point in celebrating the good stuff, then, would there?

re: this suitcase synchronicity thing...I didn't know there was a suitcase, it happened to be the phrase I was using to refer to the empty carapace (if that's the term) as a suitcase for carrying an insect. Love it when stuff like that happens, where one knows without knowing, so to speak. I'm big on that sort of thing, happens to me all the time...have I mentioned I'm up to something like two dozen pirate references? I've stopped counting because it's become ridiculous and so numerous as not to be special anymore!!).

Ruined your taste for creme soda, did I? My work here is done... But wait, is there another food reference I can use to further my nefarious plot to curdle stomachs everywhere? ...*I* know...root beer candy! Heh heh heh...

iamshe In reply to iamshe [2004-11-28 00:39:56 +0000 UTC]

You know, I wasn't really clear about what "good" means--I do think that people are responsible for what is problematic to them, but "good" doesn't have to mean "blissfully and one-dimensionally euphoric." I mean, I believe that life *is* good, in all its dimensions, not excluding the painful or difficult ones. My goal is to eliminate *suffering* in my own experience, by which I mean specifically secondary pain, or having feelings about feelings (such as guilty about being angry, etc). Then we'd just have to live in that pesky present moment, going to the trouble of embracing life fully and with our most pristine and honed attention, darnit. ( )

I could live in a world of only good things if I had to. But of course people seem to thrive under stress and end up manufacturing problems.

It took me a while but I figured it out. Eventually.

I hate those candies, so that's okay!

awesome that is truly awesome..i love cicaydas...i love to catch them when they first come out of the ground and play with them...and raise them and watch them come out of their shells then set them free..they are very common here in the summer months...i have always been facinated by them..i know i am very very weird..but i have a connection with bugs and animals and nature...i am sure you wanted to know that TRULY AMAZING PICTURE!

Wow, that's pretty wild! They don't have them on the West coast, but when I lived in New York as a kid I remember getting one and constructing a little lego cage for it. Then I hooked it up to a 9v battery and made it sing for me. I'm sure that its decendents are plotting their revenge.

Bosaiya In reply to LieToMe [2004-11-26 03:43:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The background was accidental. At least the placement was. That's a Sto-fen bounce over a flash head. I was trying to get it to fill up the frame behind the shell for a transparent effect, but as I have no off-camera flash cord I had to manually trigger the flash, which was being held in my hand, at approximately the same time as I was releasing the shutter on the camera. I moved the flash while doing so but thought it was kind of nice like that.
