"What the krif blew up down there?!" "Sorry ma'am. We were attempting to slice some droid we found aboard one of the Sith Star Dest-." "Droid? Let me guess, red robes? Self-destruct system?" "Yes ma'am." "I see. Pardon me, I need to go file a report with General Marek. Seems the Sentinels are still around." - Unidentified New Republic Intelligence Agent and Director Deena Shan.

Manufactured in the utmost secrecy at the Maw Installation prior to the Galactic Civil War, the Sentinels were developed at the order of Emperor Palpatine. These droids would be dispatched whenever Palpatine needed an important message conveyed to specific officers within the Empire, ones he did not want to risk leaking out on even encrypted channels. Once these droids had delivered their messages, they would return directly to the Emperor to report their success. The Sentinels would occasionally be seen escorting the Emperor. When the Emperor was killed during the Battle of Endor, a host of Sentinels were dispatched from the Imperial Palace and sent to various officers across the Empire, ordering some to activate the Emperor's contingency plan to begin forming a Shadow Empire that would reveal itself as a new threat to the Rebellion and New Republic. Others such as Admiral Garrick Versio and Moff Raythe were ordered to commence with Operation Cinder, the Operation meant to act as a stalling effort to distract the New Republic from the overnight disappearances of many numerous Imperial Agents. The Sentinels would then vanish as fast as they appeared, accompanying their charges on their missions should the messages need repeating. The existence of these droids wouldn't be discovered until shortly after the Battle of Jakku in 5 ABY when Republic Troopers, boarding the wreckage of the Eviscerator, the Flagship of Admiral Versio to confirm the admiral's death, discovered the burnt remnants of one droid. The Droid was determined to have destroyed itself after Versio had been confirmed killed in the crash. The Sentinels wouldn't reappear until during the Shadow Wars when one was seen accompanying the Empress Darth Akul during her first ever speech to the Sith Parliament. Other Sentinels have since been seen with some of the Sith Empire's elite officers. The Sith variants of the droids have two tall triangular collar crests behind their heads meant to imitate Darth Akul's togruta montrals.

The droids were usually programmed with two messages, ones that could be heard by anyone the intended recipient allowed, and one that was exclusive for the recipient's ears only. The droids were programmed to imitate organic behavior to some extent, giving the illusion that they were an actual person, but this was also so that they could imitate the bodily motions of the person recording the message. The droids were built from the bodies of seized BX Commando Droids from the Clone Wars, only modified with five fingered hands and the holo-projection system in its head. The droids were intended to be mistaken as organic figures and often received high priority treatment by its escorts. Many Imperials who escorted these droids never knew they were droids although there were suspicions. In order to prevent capture, if the droids calculate a high probability of capture or their recipient dies, they're programmed to self-destruct.
