Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Jennifer Potter attended college in the Untied States after receiving a scholarship to play hockey at SCU. With the other dorms taken, she was able to find an open spot at one of the suites that housed multiple female athletes. Joining Melinda Crane (basketball), Liz Meiri (swimming) Xia Wong (fencing), and Autumn Sneed (gymnastics) in their sophmore year, Jen was able to integrate herself with the fantastic foursome.

Jen's college experience was normal until one of her roommates, Melinda, developed superhuman abilities and adopted the heroic moniker Mindy Marvel. Xia soon followed suit, disclosing her past escapades as the floral fighting phenom Bauhinia when she attended Crawfordsville University. With Autumn's engineering background to create gadgets and equipment and Liz's fashion sense to create their costumes, Jen used her knowledge as a computer science major to be the voice in the earpiece to provide assistance to the heroines. After Liz's Hylunian abilities manifested and she joined the duo as Marina, Autumn and Jen provided support from the comfort of their dorm.

After graduation, Jen moved to New York City and received her Masters Degree from NYU and worked towards her doctorate while working for one of the countries largest software companies. Even though the 5 friends were spread throughout the country, they all would visit each other as often as possible. During a visit by Melinda to New York, Jen mentioned how she had been diagnosed with a rare disease. With traditional medicine not responding, Mel contacted Kayla who brought in the doctors from the Super Human Initiative. Using a variation of the "Phoenix" formula that granted Emily Sanders her amazing abilities, they were able to stablize Jen and, ultimately, reverse her condition.

Jen's recovered quickly and was able to return to her normal life, sort of. The formula also gave her pyrokinetic abilities. Since her other former roommates had embarked on heroic careers (Autumn being the latest, calling herself Bluebird after finding an Asgardian artifact that transformed her into a steel winged Valkyrie), Jen decided to follow suit as the fiery fighter Ember.
