Description
In the wild, desert wargs roam free in many parts of the Wastelands. The Warhordes capture and ride these beasts into battle. The riders wear furs from dead wargs to impose dominance on their mounts.
BASIC INFORMATION Anatomy & Morphology
In many respects the desert warg resembles most canines with the exception of its huge size. The desert warg has an unproportionally bulky chest and a huge muzzle. Most desert wargs are dark brown or black; however, lighter individuals have been known to exist.
Dietary Needs and HabitsThe wargs eat only meat. This can be hard to find on the plains and deserts of the Wastelands. As a result the wargs are not picky and will eat anything it can find, be it human, orc or even other wargs.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Social Structure
In the wild, the warg pack is led by a dominant male. These males are highly prized by the warhordes and if captured usually results in the capture of the entire pack.
DomesticationDesert wargs are prized by the warhordes for their loyalty and ferocity in battle. When the orcs encounter the wargs in the wild they will divert almost any task to capture these animals. However, capturing a warg is no simple task. Usually a party of twenty will go on a warg hunt armed with nets and snares. Wargs do not capture easily and it is not uncommon for only ten orcs to return with maybe three wargs in tow. Once captured each warg (with the exception of one) is assigned to a rider who begins the process of domesticating their mount through a series of brutal beatings and threats. One warg is usually saved for the final lesson in which the warg is slain in front of the others in a final act of dominance. The warg riders skin the carcass in front of the other wargs and wear the pelt as a constant reminder of who is in charge. The slain warg is then fed to the graduates. Once domesticated the fierce wargs are completely loyal to their masters and will even protect them in battle if necessary.
Uses, Products & ExploitationWhen a warg dies in battle or of natural causes the meat is eaten by orc and warg alike. Nothing is wasted, the skins and bones are used for clothing and decoration.
Perception and Sensory CapabilitiesThe desert warg has an excellent sense of smell and can detect prey from many miles away. In the wild the wargs hunt in packs and have the ability to communicate with each other through yelps and growls.
