I highly recommend the upper falls trail. It's a strenuous 8 miles round trip if you go all the way to the top, but if you have some good hiking boots, water and first aid it will reward you with some great views of the upper falls and the valley below. You will go so close to the upper falls that you will be able to feel the mist from it. You can also get the upper falls and Half Dome in the same shot.

Aww I'm not sure we'll have time to do that. Well only be there for a day and the NPS website says it's a 6 to 8 hours' hike...

ah, in that case, check out the lower falls trail, it's about a mile and fairly quick and easy but has some neat views of both the upper and lower falls together. Also be sure to check out Tunnel View on your way in.
