Description Posted in memory of the men and women of Australia's armed services who gave their lives.

From 1947 until 2018, Wally (Wal) Scott-Smith had been the caretaker of the Martin Place Cenotaph, a memorial dedicated to Australia's fallen soldiers.

Scott-Smith was unable to enlist to join the Army due to an early cancer illness; however, determined to show his support for Australia's Army, he regularly helped clean the Cenotaph during his services as a Rover Scout. In 1946, he was eventually offered the position of caretaker.

Every ANZAC Day (25 April), Scott-Smith would stand guard at the Cenotaph for the entire day and also guide people who laid wreaths to pay their respects.

Towards the end of the 2018 Dawn Service at the Cenotaph, Scott-Smith's services were acknowledged in a surprise public tribute, culminating in a standing ovation from those who attended the service.
