Yet another sketch challenge for the Weekly Sketch Challenge thread over at Ten Ton [link]I knew nothing about the Metal Men when I started this, so I had to do a ton of research. Inevitably, I ran out of time and rushed a bit on this piece. I inked this piece faster than any other I've ever worked on, using a Prismacolor brush-tip and 08 marker for all the blacks, and Prismacolors gray markers for the gray tones. Even though I went so quickly (and next to never use a brush or brush-tip pen for contour lines), I really like how it turned out (only the contour lines--I generally hate everything I ink, and I think this is another fine example). I think I'll experiment with brushes a bit more down the line when I have a chance.

I think you did a great job with the inking, personally. The only time I used brushtips was on THIS
piece, and I think you did a much better shading job than I did.
I'm like you in that I know really nothing about the Metal Men, but I like your art here - there's action going on, yet you can still see each character clearly. Great job, I say! ^__^

Ha! Thanks very much! You know, I feel a little better about this piece now. I checked out your image and wow, you've got such a steadier hand than I do (hmmm, I guess I won't be performing surgeries any time soon--THE WORLD IS SAVED!). I think you did a very good job on inking yours. I really like the hair. Did you use gray brush tips for the toning? On mine I use the standard Prismacolor double-tip markers you can pick up at Michael's and other arts/crafts stores(some of them...the one nearest my house said they don't stock them because too many people steal them). In fact, because I really like the tones to be even, I typically only use the broad side of the marker. It takes a little bit of practice, but every gray-toned piece I've done in my gallery was done this way, and I generally like the look of most of them.
And I don't know if you've gotten the chance yet or not, but when you can, check out the newest Metal Men limited series. Dunan Rouleau does the art on it. You may really like it. You can probably just Google that series with his name and find some pics online. It's not normally the style I work in, but it has really inspired me to experiment a bit.

Heh. His name is Lead. Since they're all named after metals and reflect the general characteristics of their namesakes, I guess he's the big softie of the group (and maybe he even poisons people and makes them go crazy if they drink water from pipes made from him...hmmm, I haven't seen THAT in the Metal Men comics I've looked at).
You know, I show all my art to my two-and-a-half-year-old son to see what he thinks of it, and he loved Lead too! I think he maybe just looks like the nicest guy in the bunch.
