Commonly known as the Zorn palette. Popularized by Andres Zorn (1860-1920) and based on a palette 5 or 6 thousand years old called the Ancient palette. It consists of black, white, a red earth and a yellow earth.

Primarily, yes. I do often add two colors: Alizarin Crimson and Transparent Red Oxide, but those are only when I need a rich dark red-orange for shadows like in the nostrils or opening to the mouth. You would be surprised at the various mixtures you can achieve with such a limited palette!
