Ashes Over GermanyAnother piece in the "Ashes Over" series.
This one depict the last flight of the "Duchess of Fubar", an American B-17 (452nd Bomb Group, 730th Squadron) which was shot down over Germany during a bombing raid on March 23, 1944.
Had a few problems composition-wise, but salvaged the image with some cropping. Original Image painted at 240 dpi, 40"x24".

Good depiction of the run home as it seems like they are going back over the channel with several bombers boxed together to protect several wounded bombers not in the picture but ahead of the picture as you can see they are flying through the dark smoke of fires. The Duchess is not firing which is odd. Stunned silence ?? 3000ft-5000ft is pretty low so we know limping bombers is probably the reason the Duchess is escorting them home. I don't recall any stories about this situation ever happening so would really like to know if it did indeed happen this way.

Actually those are 109s. The Yellow Noses are a dead giveaway. 110's are twin props.
