I think I can answer all of those questions in one fell swoop. Dis is a female dwarf from The Hobbit.
Although she's only mentioned in passing in the book. She's sister to Thorin Oakenshield and mother of Fili and Kili. I've seen a whole lot of people drawing their own versions of this gorgeous bearded lady and decided to contribute, hehe.

I haven't read the book yet, but my friend said she bought me a copy of the Hobbit. She really wants me to read it since she loved the book as a child.

Yeah basically. But the thing for me that sets the movie and the book miles apart is the characterisation. In the book only 3 or 4 of the 13 dwarves have even a shred of personality. The movie really establishes strong characters for all 13, and I'm a real sucker for great characters. (◡‿◡✿)
