Description In the western provinces of Latvia, one hope chases another.

This photograph was taken from an abandoned collective farming house dating from the sovietic era, and facing new facilities funded by the European Union but currently inactive.

The crisis stroke hard on the new western hope. While we were making this shot, ~LunedeSable and I, an old man ran towards us in fear that we would steal a pile of wood he left there.

Then he realized we were no thieves, smiled at us and invited us to dwell in this place. As it was. As he will probably remain for the rest of his life. Lost and forgotten...

Don't hesitate to download and have a look through the window.

Très joli, surtout le tapis de neige à l'interrieur. Belle photo ^^

Merci ! C'était un endroit un peu irréel... Très difficile de lui "rendre justice". Content que la photo te plaise !

My first experiment with 5 different exposures (not to show off... But I really needed 5 from the sun in front to the dark walls!) Glad you enjoy it...

Beautiful shot, and also, story too common for the countries of so called "eastern block". People are very hospitable even though are poor.

I have a new desktop!

For some people their world stops at their window and they're afraid to venture beyond it. There's something of that quality to this location because despite the crumbled ceiling there's an element of comfort to be had in the strength of the walls and the warmth in their tone. The world beyond looks desolate and depressing. Why indeed would anyone want to go outside?

Your work is always so inspiring because it invites me to conjure my own impressions on what makes the things you shoot the way they are. I'll look forward to your next masterpiece my good friend.

Thank you so much for this kind and inspired comment! I agree with you, it does feel like a nice place to dwell, and I write this despite the fact that I actually was there but from the photograph's impression only. As you can imagine, it was freezing cold in there and we both had to wear our gloves and mask for the duration of the shooting! Yet, when we left we felt a bit sad, the whole place was amazing and full of memories everywhere...

And well, you're crazy but I love your crazy comments! Thank you

This really is one of those shots you could just stare at for hours and never fully appreciate.
There's something about it I'm nowhere near intelligent enough to explain in words.Awesome stuff.

Thank you so much for your comment!

It's always a daring experience to spend weeks in an alien environment, take photographs out of pure amazement, spend 20+ hours processing and editing one of them and submitting it on DA with this secret inner question: "will this mean anything to anyone?"

I know if I shot just nice landscapes everyone would fav and move on (well... hopefully they would fav before moving on!), but this kind of shots I simply never know. Your comment, along with a few others, really means a lot to me as it answers my secret question and fulfills the secret hope that comes with it...

Shameless confession: I saw it only 10 minutes after you posted it but never responded to it. Verbally that is to say. Just wanted to come back to it again and again, and every time I did I found something new to admire and appreciate. There are so many wonderful details to enjoy here, from the patch of snow and light in front of the broken window, the broken glass, the textures of the decaying wall and ceiling, the beautiful warm light contrasting the cold view outside... And although it's relatively easy to comment and describe these things it's difficult to describe the feeling in it. Just
