My characters are always on the outside; the spotlight's not on them. But they do get somewhere." ~Jeanette Winterson

"My characters surprise me constantly. My characters are like my friends - I can give them advice, but they don't have to take it. If your characters are real, then they surprise you, just like real people." ~Laurell K. Hamilton

There are some serious downsides to messing with the same character for so long. They change--and not because you suddenly found out what was more acceptable from a literary standpoint--it's my theory that writing out a character is a lot like getting to know someone in reality. You form a starting opinion, and this lone observation can remain true, but layers and layers should keep wrapping around the core specifics. Thus, the character I roleplayed as a fourteen-year-old idiot (with cliched writing and a terrible habit of living my own make-believes rather than stepping back and letting her talk) is not the same as this one, though she certainly stuck by to rip me a new one until I got closer and closer to depicting someone with depth. Going through some old files the other day, I was laughing at myself. One, for being too scared to ever try to write anything with her, because she's not typical, and two, for always drawing her in the same situations, the ones that I found the most interesting at the time (fourteen-year-olds evidently are predisposed toward violence). I first doodled her in eight grade, and I think her initial purpose was something like the patronus in the HP series...something formed of the mind to "ward off evil." Why I thought a unicorn was an appropriate form to ward off public school bullies with is anyone's guess.

So I don't know what she is per say. I stubbornly refuse to call her a role-play character any more, because role-play writing is, as I've found out after various classes, typically very bad writing: the characters have this terrible habit of existing sporadically and without cohesion to their stories, because we as people can't help but be influenced by who we're role-playing with. I still love to role-play, but only in an episode-meet-and-greet style, rather than in long, winding plots.

That said, I know her story (which is actually not as interesting as you'd think) in the same sense that you would know the life story of a very close friend, but am convinced that I do not yet have the skill to write it down from start to finish, because I tend to think she's more like those weird, off-to-the-side, discover-a-little-at-a-time people. She's not gothic (absolutely hate that idea), nor is she Chuckles--there's a little bit of every really strict riding instructor/teacher I've ever had in her, a few of my own personal failings, and a whole lot of something I really can't identify. One thing's for sure, she is a character, and whether I ever bother to put her into anything "serious" doesn't really matter. I'll get somewhere.

And there are, perhaps, four or five of my watchers who understood any of that. XD The rest of you have to content yourselves in the knowledge that Rose really is that crazy, but only a few of her friends know about it.

I like the lighting.
And I think I sort of understand about the OC thing... I have a bad habit of abandoning stories prematurely, but some of the characters still decide to come by and visit my head, if they have enough facets to them. And sometimes even when they're being formed initially, they seem to have minds of their own, a bit.

I liken it to an extension of the imaginary friends we have as children.  We address our own problems or desires through the characters.

Well, partly it's that. But I think it's more than wish-fulfillment... I think their ability to be different than you, than what you'd expect, grows as you see more of the world and more of people who are not like yourself, but are still fun people. As you try to understand such persons. I have had characters grow in directions which I would not have chosen for myself, without my planning them that way--and I think it's as much made of what you believe likely, as what you desire, in some cases.

I agree absolutely--I did not mean to suggest that they are us (which is the main symptom of a badly-written character, in my honest opinion), but I think they serve as foils.  An interesting comparison of what we saw in ourselves and around us at the time of the character's inception versus where we are now and who we know, if you will.  The way they behave on paper, in ways you didn't initially plan, sometimes parallels what might be going on in yourself subconsciously, or what mentors are trying to instill in you.  And a lot of it is what you believe likely, as you said.  I do not for an instant mean to say that the character is meant to be a slip-in, wish-fulfillment device.  That eliminates the purpose of the character.

I don't think anyone does--just my thoughts on how OC's age like wine. XD Thanks!

The lighting in this is simply gorgeous. And I love the backstory you gave. It really adds to the picture.
I don't believe I've ever seen you draw a human before. I'd love to see more.

Wow, I love the detail to this picture!
I don't think I understand what your saying well, but I might be able to piece a little together. I actually don't have to many old main characters. Now they seem kind of stupid, so I don't use them as much anymore, or something like that. And, when I do change a few of them to keep using them, they are pretty much a different person. xD

brightredrose In reply to Muircat [2011-07-31 14:00:45 +0000 UTC]

Well it's hard to explain--I've basically had the same handbag of two or three characters for the last six (nearly seven) years, and it's been really interesting looking back on old pieces of art/writing and seeing how the characters themselves have developed, outside of art or writing. Thanks so much for the comment!

Hmm, yeah, I can never explain that kind of thing! Yeah! I like that, although, my oldest ones (Who are only a few years old) don't have many pictures of them, that I have left! Some of the art was deleted from my computer, some thrown in the garbage, and that kind of thing! Lost, crumpled, ripped...

Aww, well you have to give the poor packrats of the world some benefits, I suppose... XD That's okay, your studio/art space/computer is probably way tidier than mine. XD

WHOAH
there is so much detail in this piece that i could look at it all day!
i wish i could see it at 100% view. there's a lot of subtle texturing and such that i would love to get a closer look at.
the ambient lighting looks fantastic. avice's coat looks like molten bronze.
the way the tree branches and roots create a frame around the unicorn draws the viewer's eye right to her.

Hmm, well the reason it's not much bigger is because I haven't yet found a watermark that suits me. XD I used to upload 5MB files, but a teacher pointed out that doing so is a really bad idea, security wise. Nevertheless I'll up the size a little bit and try to find a way that works. Thanks so much!

This picture is amazing. I think you've improved with humans so much, and horses, and...everything! I also enjoyed reading what you wrote. It's interesting how characters can change...I remember making friends with you when we were around 16 or so, and Avice was definitely quite different back then...and she's grown into who she is now. It's so neat to see how characters develop like real people.

I've never really roleplayed much, always ended up being bored in the end, but I feel like some of my characters haven't been developed much at all, probably because I kept trying to change them from cliches. I think I'll eventually understand who they'll be, though.

Now I feel like I'm not making any sense. XD

wow those trees are so amazing. the moss hanging off of them and the shear detailing in the bark,. It's incredible. Your improving so much with each piece and this is one of my favorites of yours yet. It feels so magical and uplifting. I so agree with everything your saying about characters developing, All of mine slowly change but all still seem the same at roots. This character is so wonderful and so are you. c:

Oh my dear, you think too much!!! XDDD But I can relate to what you mean. Infact I'm actually often ashamed of myself because I have such a plethora of characters, that I haven't gotten to know ANY of them as well as some of you who have a dominant character do. But even in my army of faces, I do have those that tend to grow from a random creature born of my childhood thoughts, to this truly in depth being that despite my own coaxing, takes on a life of their own. It's been fun watching Saphire/Avice develop with you over the years. 8D

Oh there's no such thing as thinking too much for me. XD Or if there was a standard, I've long since broken it. I think it's outstanding when anyone explores any flight of fancy, really, because we're living in a world that is making such activities an "outdated" form of entertainment. Anywhoo thanks so much for the comment!

LOL Thinking can be good, it can also be terribly depressing. I'm a big advocate for "stupidity is the secret to happiness.." LOL XDDD But still XD. And yes, it's extremely liberating to just, let our imaginations run free. As a kid I'd much rather play with my imaginary barbie family, with all their complex little lives, than turn on a video game XD but it's getting harder to avoid technology's pull on creativity. Fun times XD.
