Very nicely done. I've been trying to figure out the best way to show civilization lights on planetary darksides in my own work, but haven't come up with a good one. I'd love to know your technique.

I'm using Photoshop combined with 3ds Max. First I make a planet texture (consisting of a few different layers) for the render in 3DS max, then I amplify the lighting with minor details to make it come out more where needed. It's mostly done manually, except for the 3ds max part.

what do you use specifically to do the lights on the nightside when you make the textures? I do planet textures as well (see my gallery) but nightside city lights are the only thing I can't seem to do.

this is a reference I made with a geography map and citylights map. I hope this helped...

I would suggest you take a look at: [link]
or if that doesn't work at: [link]
from the latter, there is something I'd like to point out, namely 'self-illumination'. That's where I put my texturemap for the city lights. The city texture map shouldn't be completely black, but rather a dark blue or 'off-black'. This is also the same map you can place where you want the citylights with a lighter color, like white or yellow. The contrast will show in the 3ds render.
It's hard to explain without creating a whole new tutorial for it. I hope you'll have some new ideas with the tutorials I've linked you. Good luck!
