The Story Begins

"Gwen, it's fine. It's just an event. A few hours on a cross country course and I'll pop Morte back in the trailer and head for home. "

" I can't even find this course in any records, it's like it never existed. The letter didn't have a return address and those driving directions were so sketchy. Please think about this!" Gwen shouted into the phone.

"Chill, there's not much to think about. Morte and I have been training for the past year. He's steady and an easy ride, it's not like I'm taking Nike out for a spin." Iris laughed at her own jab. Gwen's cross country ride was notoriously badly behaved.

"just be careful and keep your phone on you. Something is really off about this." Iris hung up the phone and popped it into her pocket. She wasn't worried about the strangeness of the event, her half sister always got too worked up about the details. The course seemed tough but nothing she couldn't handle with her training. Morte shifted slightly as she pushed him towards the course entrance.

The stallion seemed a little tentative to move into the trees. a couple of other riders were still at their trailers and Iris halted to watch them. something was missing at this show that she couldn’t place her finger on. Morte was turned out nicely and they were a little late in the day to enter the course but she had wanted to stretch out the younger stallion before taking him into the forest. "okay boy, let's go." They trotted into the dark heavy woods. the branches closed around them and Iris realized what was missing immediately. the sound of other competitors.

The woods were silent, no sound of hooves crashing over trail or riders urging on their mounts. a thick mist hung in the air and clung like phantom hands to her clothing and tack. Morte froze, pricking his ears and snorting. They turned and saw that the pathway had been covered by thick vines and brush. Iris' skin tingled and she felt a chill creep up her arms. "let's warm up and find that course."

two hours later Morte and Iris were tired, scared and confused. a few broken down jumps and a creepy growling noise that followed them. "Morte, I think we have a problem, There is no way the course we charted was that long. I think this forest is screwy. " They rested for a moment before a scream split the air and sent them leaping forward. "Run! Morte, run… run… run!!!!!!!" Iris yelled and they galloped on into the never ending mist.
