Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you, for your consideration, to most recognizable anti-monster weapon in Toho's kaiju franchise: The Maser Cannon.

As the name implies, the Maser Cannon is a direct-energy artillery weapon which generates a beam of coherent electromagnetic waves through amplification of microwaves by stimulated radiation emissions. In Toho kaiju films, it fires the beams out of its satellite dish that look like streams of lightning. The firing dish is mounted on a large mechanical arm which could be raised and lowered between firing and rest.

The Maser Cannon first appeared, officially*, in Toho's 1966 "War of the Gargantuas", where it was used to successfully attack the monster Gaira. Since then, it has appeared in many other Toho kaiju films, driving off Anguirus and Godzilla in the 1984 "Return of Godzilla" film, and helped Godzilla destroy the kaiju monster Destoroyah in the 1995 "Godzilla VS Destoroyah". Beyond these successes, however, it is usually shown as ineffective in fighting off kaijus, being as frequently blown up by the monsters as any other military vehicles.

*Some fans, me included, speculated the Atomic Heat Ray 'Markalite' cannons in the 1957 "The Mysterians / Earth Defense Force" film to be a precursor or prototype to the Maser Cannon, noting the similarities in design. Then there was the 'Atomic Heat Ray' gun the JSDF tried to use on Mothra's cocoon at Tokyo Tower during the 1961 Mothra film

Many variants of the weapon exists: the one rendered here is based on the Type-66 Maser Cannon (Give or take a few minor liberties taken in the details). More advanced looking types would appear later in the Heisei and Millennium series, such as the MBT-92, the MBAW-93, the DAG-MB96 or ULT Laser Cannon which could be converted into a freeze beam cannon, and the Type-90 Maser.
