Description My drawing of "Frankenstein's Monster Versus The Wolfman"... which is apparently too long of a title to be accepted on this site. Oh well.

Anyway, this is just a basic ink-brush drawing with digital coloring. I purposefully used a very simple and somewhat garish color scheme, and added a lot of distortion and other Photoshop hocus-pocus, to try and make it look aged, like a lurid cover illustration from an old, beat-up 1950's - 1970's horror comic book...

To be honest this one was mostly just a bit of goofing around, experimenting with Photoshop tricks, having fun.

Any chance of some Paul Naschy wolfman film tributes?

Oh, trust me, I've been a Naschy fan since the 1990's, and a couple tribute illustrations to my favorite Paul Naschy films have been "on my list" of things to do, forever. Along with some of my other big favorites, like "The Howling", "An American Werewolf in London", Cronenberg's "The Fly", etc... It's strange, but so many films that are nearest and dearest to my heart, are the ones I've shied away from doing tribute artwork for. And yeah, Naschy's stuff is in that category. There are waay too many films I've neglected for too long. Hoping to correct that in the coming year.

Both of those are great movies.
Some of these movies have multiple titles. I believe "Fury of the Wolfman" is the same film also known as: "Night of the Werewolf" or "El Retorno Del Hombre Lobo" - It's a 1980 remake of "The Werewolf v the Vampire Women". And that is one of Naschy's best, and one of my favorites. I first saw "Night of the Werewolf" in the 1990's, on a cheap $2.00 videotape, where it was titled "The Craving".

Also "Curse of the Devil" is a good one.

He also made a film that has become a little difficult to find in recent years, called "Assignment Terror" which is a little softer, it was Naschy's attempt to make a monster movie for a younger audience. So it has less sex and gore, but it's still crazy fun because Naschy literally threw every idea he could think of, into it. It has El Hombre Lobo, also Vampires, and a Frankenstein monster, and a Mummy, and (believe it or not) aliens from outer space. And of course 1970's girls in go-go boots. It is insane.

And the (admittedly mis-handled but still wonderfully schlocky) American release of Naschy's first film, "Frankenstein's Bloody Terror", is also one of my top favorites. You should definitely check that one out, if you haven't already - because it was the film that started Naschy's horror career. He's great in that one, he's like the Captain Kirk of horror. The Hombre Lobo character looks fantastic and acts really ferocious in that film. Lots of blood. And such wonderful, lurid colors. Check it out!

I'm not as big a fan of Naschy's other movies like "Dracula's Great Love" or his devil worshipper movies... But ALL his El Hombre Lobo flicks are worth a watch. Some are weak but most of them are a blast and the good ones are like horror heaven for me. Naschy has been a big influence on my comic books and I'm always trying to work a little of his crazy vibe into my own stuff. One of my heroes.

Oh and look this up too - he wrote a book called "Memoirs of a Wolfman" where he tells his whole life story and also discusses each film, so it is an excellent reference manual to learn and keep track of his films.

-B

Fury of the Wolfman was an earlier 70s one aka Wolfman never sleeps, tho I do agree Night of the werewolf is up there too. Found Beast and the magic sword a bit plodding tho, too much rehashing of older daninsky films ideas with some samurai stuff thrown in. Im yet to see Frankensteins Bloody Terror (Mark of the wolfman aka dr draculas vampires) but im rectifying that soon enough. Once ive got hold of that one and Vs Jekyll then Ill have seen all the Daninsky films (tomb of the werewolf was BAD but fun), tho there are his other werewolf pictures I need to see including Lycanthrope and Werewolf in the amazon, I like the vibe of the 70s stuff best tho. And I do have Assignment Terror on DVD albiet a german release under the title frankenstein jagt Dracula, its dubbed into german but has english subs, and yes its totally bonkers. The US dvd release is the Dracula v frankenstein title as well but is much harder to come by. Id love to get the book memoirs of a wolfman but I cant seem to find it for a reasonable price at the minute, so will keep an eye out.

One this corner, weighing 200 pounds of pure feral flesh, muscle and fur is the cursed poor soul of a nobleman we call...THE WOLFMAN!

And standing on the other side, weighing in at a near 300 lbs and standing over 7 and a half feet high is the custom-built titan of terror. The one you've all been waiting for......FRANKENSTEIN's MONSTER!

Lol, I gotta stop watching those WWE commercials on SyFy.

Have the winner decided by a vote, and then make this into a series of older movie monsters fighting each other... I say your next one should be whoever wins this, versus the mummy.

Yeah it's a great one. If you haven't seen it (tho I'm betting you already have) you should also check out "House of Frankenstein". The ultimate Universal monster rally in my opinion - the film features: The Wolf Man, Dracula, a hunchback, the very sexy Anne Gwynn, Frankenstien's monster played by Glenn Strange (in my opinion the second best Frankenstein monster actor after Karloff), and also Boris Karloff himself as a mad scientist. VERY WELL DONE. The Wolfman's death scene in that film is particularly sad.

I haven't seen it in a few years but Im probably gonna pop it back in soon. Karloff was great as that evil scientist!

My other fave monster rally is the obscure Assignment Terror, a naschy flick I saw as a kid. Mummy vs Werewolf!!

Im a geek when it comes to monsters vs monsters!

I admit to not seeing the first and have only see films like House of Dracula (both versions) and Van Helsing(which I was very excited for until about 5 minutes into the film). This pic is a million times better than all combined.

Aww you are too kind for saying so. My 3 favorite "Monster Rally" type movies (Where you have a bunch of different monsters in the same movie) are:

#1 - Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man
#2 - House of Frankenstein
#3 - Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein

If you ask me those are the good ones!

michiganj24 In reply to BryanBaugh [2007-10-15 03:26:40 +0000 UTC]

House of Frankenstein was what I was thinking of but alas I have only seen the crap that NBC produced as a miniseries that made vampires everywhere want to stake themselves. I saw part of A&C but the tape was ruined on the second half and havent seen it since. I just know that if they do the AOD v universal monsters that Bruce and Sam can make it enjoyable.
