Description As a lifelong fan of the original 1941 Lon Chaney Jr. version of "The Wolf Man", I naturally had mixed feelings about the 2010 remake, starring Benicio Del Toro. Of course the most important thing to me, was for the filmmakers to just please, please, please - get the character of the Wolf Man himself right - which they certainly did. So I applauded the remake for that, from the first viewing. But I also nit-picked everything else about it to death. Every deviation from the original story (and there were some major ones) felt like a grave error to me. I guess that's just what us movie fans do when one of our old favorites gets re-made in a modern version.

I should know better. I've read plenty of accounts of 1960's horror fans who were up in arms about the remake of Dracula staring some new guy named Christopher Lee. And yet today, most of us 21st Century horror fans hold the Christopher Lee version of Dracula in the same high regard as the classic Bela Lugosi version. I think the lesson is, movie remakes are a shock to the system for the fan who has spent years in love with the original version. A lot of time must pass before we can judge a remake fairly.

Well, the Wolf Man character himself was treated so well in the 2010 remake that I kept going back for repeated viewings, just to see him in action, again and again, despite the film's other shortcomings. But with these repeat viewings I have found more and more to like about the 2010 Wolf Man. What can I tell ya - this movie has grown on me a lot. I've forgiven most of its changes to the original story and come to accept it as its own thing. And it has slowly become one of my favorite new horror movies from the past decade.

No, it is not a perfect film by any stretch, but it treated my old friend the Wolf Man with respect and didn't make a joke out of him. In fact it made him very cool and let him kill a lot of people with plenty of blood and gore - and reminded the world what a good old fashioned werewolf is capable of. And for that I love it.

There's a scene in the movie where Larry Talbot is in an insane asylum. He goes crazy and experiences a weird montage of hallucinatory images, one of which is a 3-second, "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" shot of his friend Gwen sitting naked on a bed. I have always been a sucker for stories about Monsters longing for the beautiful girl they can never have. So I decided to do an illustration of that striking moment, but with the Wolf Man clutching hold of her - as if Larry had injected himself into his own dream of Gwen. So sad...

Anyway there ya go.

This Wolfman is probably the last big-budget,quality,R-rated monster movie we will ever see. I doubt Hollywood will ever grow its nards back and deliver some quality monster action.

Oh, I don't agree with that! Trust me, I'm 42 years old, so I've been a horror movie fan for a long time. Horror trends go in cycles. Whichever kind of horror movie you like best, will become popular for a while, then it will seem to go away for a while... But eventually, they always come back around again.

I agree 100% with you about the Wolfman remake because some horror remakes, like the masterful Hammer Horror movies, will stand the test of time as movies worthy of being compared to their originals.

Love the concept and you're right about remakes some of them are better than the original and some didn't need to be made at all like the Friday the 13th remake or Nightmare on elm street remake but I guess that's how it goes

Forgive me for this very indirect reply - but you can find my answer to that question, discussed in detail, in the Comments section (below this illustraton). Several people who have commented on this illustration previously have asked my my opinions on the film (both good and bad), and we've had some pretty in-depth discussions! I feel I've said it best there.

In my opinion the remake did a decent job. Of course it wasn't the same story as the original, that would have been boring. I also found the psychological twists interesting, such as when Larry realizes that his memories of his mother's death were false all along.

Well, GREAT is a strong word. There are things about the story that bugged me. I'm a hardcore fan of the original Wolf Man and some of the big changes to the supporting characters and story really bothered me. But this remake got the most important thing right - It treated the Wolf Man character himself very, very well. They did a good job of making him scary and vicious and still sad and tragic. And the effects are awesome. It's maybe not a GREAT remake but it is a GREAT monster movie... If you get what I mean.

I was so excited for this film since I too LOVE the original film, my feeling was the overall story of the 1941 version was just fine, all they needed to do with the remake was fix up some of the plot-holes and maybe go a little deeper with the characters and what not.
When I saw the film I left the theatre pissed, in my opinion is that this was a terrible remake. The best part and good metaphor for how the film as a whole should have been was Rick Baker's amazing make-up, it was basically the same make-up as the original but updated with modern materials and made more badass and horrific looking for today's audience.
I like Bencio Del Toro but I thought he was bland as Larry Talbot, in general I thought the whole cast was bland, even (I hate to say) Anthony Hopkins. The only person in the film I cared about or was even a little interested in was Hugo Weaving's Inspector Aberline.

Spoiler Alert:
The biggest and worst change for me was making Larry's father the villian, I mean its a wolf-man film, the main character IS the villian, that's what makes it so tragic. But no it was all the father's fault, because I guess we couldn't identify Larry unless he was fighting someone evil. That moment in the original when Sir John realizes that he just killed his son, that all this "werewolf nonesense" was all true was one of the best parts of the first film.
In my opinion if you want to see a good wolfman remake watch Wolf (1994) with Jack Nicholson, ya its not techincally a wolfman remake but its story is very similar and it's well... good! Ok rant over, (I think I had a lot of bottled up anger that I needed to get out with this film) this is just my opinion, and if you enjoyed the remake more power to ya.
Oh ya and by the way,
GREAT drawing, I love it.

I adore this. I feel it's also tribute to both Wolfmans actually. Wonderful job!

I love this!! And I agree with Wolfman being treated with great respect, not some modernized CGI werewolf character that would ruin the movie. I love how you took that image of Gwen, and made a romantic image of her and Larry Talbot in Wolfman form. Excellent piece of work!!

i liked this movie, i really liked it. it had its flaws, but it was by far the best old style monster flick i have seen in a good long time. the character was handled well, the characters memerable, the story similar yet different (as a remake should be), and the gore is great. and it had a cool werewolf fight, a very good female lead who actually had alot to do, and it was a load of fun. i actually really disliked the asylum scenes, the doctors were annoyingly evil and the hallucinations struck me as out of place, but what are you gonna do. this remake was as good as we could reasonably have expected it to be, in my humble opinion. that is just me, though.
