Description The movie "Creepshow" - is one of my all-time favorite films. I saw it at the age of ten, when it first came out in 1982. I was instantly obsessed with it. Here was a horror movie with an old-fashioned graveyard zombie, a plant monster, a furry maneater, water-zombies, and a million evil bugs. It also had crazy bright colors, an exaggerrated comic book visual style, and one of the spookiest musical scores ever recorded (by John Harrison).

On top of all that, Creepshow also played an important role in my horror education.

It was the movie that first exposed me to Stephen King (who wrote it), and fired me up to start reading his novels, no matter how long they were.

It was the movie that introduced me to George Romero (who directed it), though I knew about "Night of the Living Dead" before that, it was "Creepshow" that really got me addicted to his films.

It was the film that taught me who Tom Savini was (because he made the monsters and did all the gore special effects), and made me start following his work.

But most importantly of all, Creepshow was the movie that introduced me to Bernie Wrightson (who illustrated the comic book adaptation). Oh, I'd seen Wrightson's work in the "Swamp Thing" and "House of Mystery" comics by that point, but the "Creepshow" comic book was the thing that made me memorize his name and start paying attention. (Which is ironic, because when I look back at this same material today, I actually find his "Swamp Thing" work to be far superior...) But anyway, once I made the connection that this was the same illustrator from those other books, Wrightson instantly became my favorite artist, the guy I looked at and said, "THAT'S how I wanna draw when I grow up!"

Well, I'm still nowhere close to Bernie, but I try.

To this day, Creepshow is still in my top ten all-time favorite movies list. Anybody who has seen it will of course remember "Fluffy", also known as "The Monster From The Crate". So, here is my loving tribute!

Nicely done! "The Crate" is my favorite of the stories in CREEPSHOW. The monster is great. But I'm especially fond of Fritz Weaver and Hal Holbrook's performances -- two really good actors who added genuine "class" to an already excellent movie.

My favorite CREEPSHOW story has always been a toss-up between "Father's Day" which is the most genuine tribute to E.C. Horror Comics... and "The Crate" which is probably the best-done part with the most ferocious horror... and "Something to Tide You Over" which is the creeeeepiest....

But certainly The Crate is one I keep coming back to. What can I say, CREEPSHOW is one of my favorite movies and I love em all.
Thanks for your kind words on my illustration!!

The use of colours in that movie always reminded me of Mario Bava's colour work... those reds and purples...

BryanBaugh In reply to Fabiano777 [2012-03-19 18:31:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes that is a good point. Actually I think the lineage goes like this: Romero was looking for a way to imitate the strong chromatic colors used at moments of high drama in comic books (which inspired "Creepshow"). Romero had been friends with Dario Argento ever since they worked together on "Dawn of the Dead". Argento was famous for his style of colored lighting (on movies like "Suspiria" and "Inferno") which was, in itself, inspired by the brightly colored lights used in the films of Mario Bava (most notably "Black Sabbath").

I think Romero was consciously inspired by Argento's colored lighting tricks, and borrowed them, to get the look he wanted on this film.

In other words - Romero's colored lighting on "Creepshow" was a cartoony version of Argento's colored lighting on "Suspiria", which was an exaggerated version of Bava's style!

Yes, "Black Sabbath" is the one i have in mind too...
I like the lineage you are tracing: Romero > Argento > Bava ... that's quite a realistic vision of how it happened!
Anyway, to me, Argento is, was, and will always be just a Mario Bava rip-off...
If you have seen "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" ("La Ragazza Che Sapeva Troppo") or "Blood and Black Lace" ("Sei Donne Per l'Assassino") then you have seen all the good Argento movies...

HAHA - Brilliant observation, re: "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" and "Blood and Black Lace" containing the essential ingredients of all Argento movies! Yes I have seen pretty much all of Bava's films and love (most of) them dearly.

I won't go so far as to call Argento a Bava rip-off. "Suspiria" is too genuinely great, and many of his others are too much fun, to minimize him like that.

Rather I would say, Argento is to Bava, what DePalma is to Hitchcock.

...By that I mean, both Argento and DePalma are too interesting and talented in their own right to be dismissed as copycats. But obviously they were both shaped by, and owe massive stylistic debts to, their respective predecessors!

Fabiano777 In reply to BryanBaugh [2012-03-20 10:36:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't know...
In fact, "Suspiria" is the only Argento movie i really like.
But, while a lot of people consider DePalma (which is, to me very talented on his own)a "poor man's Hitchcock", i hardly can consider Argento more than an honest "bavian" (i think i've just invented the word ) director.
Anyway, YOUR work is great Bryan!

Have you seen Trick R' Treat? It's a newer horror movie, in the same anthology tradition of Creepshow and Tales From the Crypt, but still manages to stay fresh and original. It takes several of the horror genres, like slashers, and zombies, etc, and put them into four intertwining stories: A principal who secretly a killer; A drowned school bus full of kids; A group of girls being stalked by masked stranger; and an old man fighting a demon. You got to see it!

This is by far my favourite mini-story from Creepshow. It stuck with me when I saw it when I was little and is still with me today. I snatched up the DVD the second I saw it and have never regretted it since!

You truly have an amazing talent for both line and composition. A definite fave!

Super awesome!!! Your textures are outta sight!

I would have really enjoyed it if the girl looked more like Barbeau though... but I'm sure random college chick is tasty too.

BryanBaugh In reply to cyclonaut [2008-01-16 22:41:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know. I'm a fan of many movies Ms. Barbeau has appeared in (Creepshow, The Fog, Escape From New York, Swamp Thing...) but for some reason I never found her attractive in "that way". Maybe cause I was so young when a lot of those movies first came out, she just seemed more like a mom type to me than a typical sexy damsel or whatever. So I considered making this female victim look like her... and then gave in to my own personal preferences... what can I say!

cyclonaut In reply to BryanBaugh [2008-01-16 22:59:30 +0000 UTC]

HAHA. I've always thought she was sexy, but Marlena thinks she looks like a man.

She's the sexiest in Escape from L.A. and the Fog.... and maybe Swamp Thing, but I have not seen that in forever.
