Description On my list of favorite movies, "Return of the Living Dead" by Dan O'Bannon, is way, way, way up there at the top. This film came out in 1985. I was in the seventh grade and saw it at the theater. I went in with average expectations. Based on the TV commercials, it looked like it should be a decent zombie movie. Instead, what I got was a horror paradise.

Its incredible mix of genuine freaky scares, genuine good humor, exaggerated comic book style zombies, punk rockers, gory violence, shameless abundance of female nudity, great characters, memorable dialogue, excellent special effects, and true Midwestern American goofiness really, really hit me and charged my imagination into overdrive.

Since then I have seen it many, many times and over the years my love for this movie has only increased. I have often wondered if it might just be my number one favorite horror movie of all time. I hate to say any one horror film is my definite #1 favorite cause there are so many I love so much. But this film is certainly in my top three.

But one thing I am 100% positive about, without any doubt in my mind, is that The Tarman, (the star monster of Return of the Living Dead) is far and away my number one, all time favorite zombie in a movie ever.

So here is my drawing of him in action.

This illustration was done as a commission assignment for a guy who has bought a lot of my original artwork. He asked me to do an original illustration of The Tarman for him. Now that I've done this image I find myself wanting to do more illustrations of different scenes from the film. I will probably have to eventually...

This was a great movie. Β I watched it for the first time the other day and it has now become one of my new favorite zombie series, especially since the whole thing was done with good old fashioned special effects that really paid off with creatures like The Tar-man. Β Just goes to show that a classic can be made without all the high-tech backwash they like to throw in everything nowadays.

I think the thing that really made shake the most from the movie when I first saw it when I was between the ages of 11 and 12 wasn't the zombies, but the part where Frank tells Freddy that the whole premise for Romero's Night Of The Living Dead was actually based on true events. Again, I was only between the ages 11 and 12 so I couldn't tell whether or not O'Bannon made it up, or if it was an actual event that he heard of, but it really sacred me for a few days until my uncle calmed me downed and assured me that it was all made up.Β

That's funny.

One of the best jokes in the movie is the statement at the very beginning where it says this movie is based on a true case about real people!

Exactly. That's what really got the hairs on the back of my neck standing. I actually thought that O'Bannon had written the movie based on true events. Again, I was only 11 or 12, so I wasn't well aware that it was all fiction.

I've always felt that Tarman is an under-rated horror icon from the 80's. In my mind, he is on par with Freddy or Jason, easily.

Well yeah of course I knew. They have to get your permission before they can just use your art.

They also used my other Tarman illustration.
I wrote about the experience in the text section of this image:Β bryanbaugh.deviantart.com/art/…

LOVE, love, love so much ooh Β i just want to kiss my computer screen!
One of my fave films too, when i watched it for the first time on VHS I was expecting just another zombie flick but when they spoke I fell of my settee, literally fell on the floor in shock it was the first talking zombie Id ever seen ...not only that they ran!!!
When that half corpse explain that eating brain stops the pain and another calls for more paramedic ..i was shocked to the core, they reasoned and they had a reason for eating our brain...not people but brains!
All these revelations hocked me for a long long time..in fact I think the mental impact still shows in my art work..

Ab..so..lutly...AMAZING movie and great art, Β you somehow managed to capture their likeness with just a few marks. Not far how easily you managed that..making me feel jealous. Β

Your artwork is so much fun. I'd love to get a portfolio book of it for my coffee table someday. YouΒ have such aΒ  unique style and you have work from just about every horror movie, very exciting. Return of the Living Dead was a great movie and twist to the zombie movie genre and this piece is a great tribute to the film )

Awesome thanks for the link. Just wondering, do you only do work from things that have been in film or do you think you could draw something after reading about it in a book? I talk with a lot of authors through Goodreads and HorrorWorld and well I know a few that might be interested in the work you do here. If you can get on to Goodreads.com, try to connect with either Evans or Adam Light. They are brothers that write some fun horror stuff. Also, it would be cool to see what you might come up with after reading something by either J.A.Konrath, Blake Crouch, or Jeff Strand. Their book they all worked on together called Draculas is one I highly recommend and think you style would be perfect for doing a graphic novel of.

Β  Again thanks for the link. I will check it out )

Tarman- One of the best zombies in all of horror movie history! (I especially love the part where he says, "More brains!")

I honestly have to say that Return of the Living Dead is one of my favorite zombie movies. It blends horror and humor very well. I find myself faceplaming and laughing during the "send more paramedics" scene!

it's not a horror movie. it's one of those "it's only funny cause you can tell how cheeseballed it is" like the gates of hell. ever seen that one??? how about the worms??? those are ones that are so bad you laugh.

like is that guy at the top of the stairs the one who knocks the zombies head clean off with a baseball bat and tottal exposes the fact that it's some kind of animatronic dummy???
