Description The original 1974 version of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" has a way of emotionally clobbering you over the head with a sledgehammer, every time you watch it. But every single "clobber" in the movie is different, and certain scenes strike with such force that you can find yourself too stunned to even feel the next hit.

But that's a wonderful thing, because the next time you watch the film and go into another session of clobbering, you can catch the beatings that you were too dazed to feel the last time around.

Thatvery thing happened to me, on my most recent re-viewing. A scene that had never really "struck me" before, hit me very, very hard this time... and inspired this illustration.

I'm talking about the scene right after Leatherface kills Franklin (the kid in the wheelchair) and then starts chasing Sally through a seemingly endless dead forest of brittle trees, sharp branches and crackling twigs. It happens at night under the glow of the moon, and everything is blue and the world is filled with the sputtering roar of Leatherface's chainsaw motor and Sally's pathetic shrieks of terror.

Now... as a life-long horror fan, I've probably watched the ORIGINAL Texas Chainsaw a million, zillion times... Because, let's face it, the ORIGINAL "TCM" is to true horror fans what "Fantasia" is to animation fans... it's like required reading or something, and your education is not complete without having experienced it.

But, for whatever reason, on previous viewings, this chase scene just seemed to skim by for me. I guess I just thought of it as a bridge between bigger landmarks... Or maybe I was always too stunned by Franklin's sad, shocking death, and Grandpa sucking blood from Sally's sliced fingers, to feel the sting of events that transpire in between...

But this time - that chase through the dead forest seemed to be one of the most powerful moments in the film.

I guess I had never before really appreciated how it seems to go on forever, with all that noise and terror... And poor Sally being forced to lacerate herself to ribbons, while running top speed through all those sharp, dead tree branches... And old Leatherface right behind her, chasing her like a mindless predatory animal, with no instinct but to kill.

So I decided to draw it up. I figured Leatherface probably chased a lot of different girls through those woods in his time. So I decided to throw him one of my random female characters and watch the fun...

Glistening th Gunnar Hansens commentary was so funny when he talks about how slow the actress was, and he kept catching up to her and having to slow down deliberately, that and the chainsaw was live when filming.

This is beautiful, I love Leatherface, and you really captured this very well, I love how the girl is running, but you can really see the terror in her face as she's running, she is terrified, and I love that you gave this picture life.... one of my favorite DeviantArt pictures/horror film art of all time and this sort of reminds me of the 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Part III' (1990)... it has that kinda of feeling and vibe to me when I look at this beautiful picture

Ok. So obviously a lot of horror films in the last few years are remakes? (The tcm movies, nightmare on elm st movie, the descent, and even amityville) These tcm films are amazingly good if you're into horror. So was tcm-the beginning not a remake? What about the "hostel" series of movies? Are they remakes too? Btw, your art is like seriously amazing!Β

I could talk all day about this subject but your question is a bit too complicated for a quick answer.
Do some research. Look up each of these movie titles on Wikipedia, that should get you started and clear up the background info for each.

After that, there are tons of great books about the history of horror films that will give you deeper and more reliable information.

Sweet as! I'll have a look on wiki then. A good horror is worth watching over and over. I heard about another movie by a guy called rob zombie! I mean with a name like that and the title "house of 1000 corpses" it's gotta be totally entertaining right! I'll let you know what it's like if you haven't seen it.Β

Sorry for spam but yeah I know I don't comment on all of your works. I do feel bad about that. Mostly I think it's because I'm not a fan of many horror films. Yet I do praise your art it's quite amazing. And also seeing many of the comments below this pic, Gunnar wanting to be a writer, and some other stuff too. It's just I will argee with you on the whole about this chase scene thing. But I'm thinking we have differnt views. Don't know I just really love that scene. Mostly because I'm guessing I liked of how it was shot. Most films these put music and put the camera closer. Yet the cahse scene between Sally and Leatherface is some what detailed. And like the only thing you would be hearing in the air would be Sally's screaming or Leatherface's chainsaw. Or the stuff around them that's being crushed by their feet and other stuff yeah. Even the far off shot that just focuses on Sally and Leatherface coming to the screen I some what do not know but like. Mostly I'm guessing yeah the whole entire chase scene is jsut well like what I said. Hope your alright with the faces.

For Franklin I mean yeah his death was pretty sad. Mostly I thought that he was a good character. And yet his death is the only scene where we see Leatherface actually using his chainsaw to kill some one. Yet seeing just Leatherface's body coverign up his killing of Franklin is some what wow.

I don't know what I'm talking about. I'd really like of what you said in the info below. And also I do indeed know one of these days I'm gonna have to watch the movie again. Along with it's first sequel maybe too. Yet I've only been a horror fan since I guess 10 13 years old. Got into it by mistake yet I guess it's a hobby. I don't even know why I like horror. Maybe cause unlike most movie genres. I feel it some what has a more in depth into it maybe. I'd just don't know. Sorry if I am confusing you. Hope you answer and hope you enjoy the comment too. I umm ugh.

You really captured the raw terror of the film with this piece.

The original "TCM" was... unlike anything I had seen in a horror movie. It was all just "in-your-face" but the chase scene had my heart pounding!

I made the mistake of watching the original "TCM" late at night. Alone. It was just... unlike anything I had seen before in a horror movie. The whole thing was "in-your-face" but this scene had my heart pounding like a freaking jackhammer!
