Description The original 1974 version of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" has a way of emotionally clobbering you over the head with a sledgehammer, every time you watch it. But every single "clobber" in the movie is different, and certain scenes strike with such force that you can find yourself too stunned to even feel the next hit.

But that's a wonderful thing, because the next time you watch the film and go into another session of clobbering, you can catch the beatings that you were too dazed to feel the last time around.

Thatvery thing happened to me, on my most recent re-viewing. A scene that had never really "struck me" before, hit me very, very hard this time... and inspired this illustration.

I'm talking about the scene right after Leatherface kills Franklin (the kid in the wheelchair) and then starts chasing Sally through a seemingly endless dead forest of brittle trees, sharp branches and crackling twigs. It happens at night under the glow of the moon, and everything is blue and the world is filled with the sputtering roar of Leatherface's chainsaw motor and Sally's pathetic shrieks of terror.

Now... as a life-long horror fan, I've probably watched the ORIGINAL Texas Chainsaw a million, zillion times... Because, let's face it, the ORIGINAL "TCM" is to true horror fans what "Fantasia" is to animation fans... it's like required reading or something, and your education is not complete without having experienced it.

But, for whatever reason, on previous viewings, this chase scene just seemed to skim by for me. I guess I just thought of it as a bridge between bigger landmarks... Or maybe I was always too stunned by Franklin's sad, shocking death, and Grandpa sucking blood from Sally's sliced fingers, to feel the sting of events that transpire in between...

But this time - that chase through the dead forest seemed to be one of the most powerful moments in the film.

I guess I had never before really appreciated how it seems to go on forever, with all that noise and terror... And poor Sally being forced to lacerate herself to ribbons, while running top speed through all those sharp, dead tree branches... And old Leatherface right behind her, chasing her like a mindless predatory animal, with no instinct but to kill.

So I decided to draw it up. I figured Leatherface probably chased a lot of different girls through those woods in his time. So I decided to throw him one of my random female characters and watch the fun...

I know I didn't comment on the other so I'll comment here. Awesome, I've always been a fan of the TCM movies, I like all of them (except the one where he has a daughter?). I love all horror movies, and your artwork is the whipped cream to my horror strawberries XD

My god, the thought of this movie scares the shit out of me. It really does. I can't bring myself to watch it, as good as I heard the ORIGINAL is. Leatherface absolutely terrifies me. In every, single way possible. I can't watch clips (from the Top 100 Scariest Movie Countdown on Bravo), I can hardly look at the boxes and cases for the movies for it.

This is an excellently illustrated piece though. I can't get over it. I am terrified of Leatherface, but addicted to this image. :3

My wife said the exact same things until I made her watch it. Now she just has that, "Ahh, yeah, I tried that roller coaster ride. It was good, it was scary, no big deal..." attitude about it. Haha. And the best part is, after that, no horror movie scares her and she's pretty much willing to try any movie now. It was a healthy barrier for her to break down.

What really scared me about this movie was how realistic it was... there was hardly any music, except for the radio in the van, which made it very eerie. The surreal photography, such as the feathers and bones in the house or the shot of the girl's eye at the dinner table also gives a feeling of uneasiness and being out of your element: like someone grabbed you out of your comfort zone and threw you into something unknown and possibly dangerous.

The inking in this piece is fantastic, especially the interwoven branches of the trees in the background. I'm surprised you haven't drawn a TCM pic like this earlier!

I'm surprised it took me this long to get around to doing a TCM piece, too. But now that I have, I find myself wanting to do another!

Now who doesn't love a shapely blonde in a way short skirt being chased through the woods by a chainsaw weilding psycho! Your head screams "RUN GIRLIE RUN YOU CAN MAKE IT!", but your heart knows she's gonna trip over that branch and she's gonna die...horribly...with lot's of screaming and spurting blood. Well done!

Killer work. I, personally, can't handle horror movies. Something about me, but I just can't do it.

This will be the extent of what I can gather from 'TCM.'

This image is wonderful though, solid and excellent coloring. You really get that feel for the mood of the night with the cool blue. Stellar job as usual, B!

I must agree, older horror films have a more emotive quality to them. As much as I like R. Lee Ermey, the "remake" was just flat compared to the original. Well, there's only one thing to do about it.

Cool gallery, by the way.

Heh nice! My favourite horror flick is Evil Dead but respect is due to TCM, the mother of all Splatter movies.

I knew someone that cut their thumb off while pruning a tree with a chainsaw, they manged to reattach it but it never looked or worked the same thereafter.

great work. i always liked how fast the whole chase scene was. running through obsticals with a chainsaw muffler blowing on your heels ( the things nightmares are made off ). the movie constantly changed its pace like this and kept the crowed unable to adjust. ah, thats just my take. excellent job of catching it in this piece,. the snapping branches say it all

Never seen the thing the whole way through, but caught the part you described. Betcha the poor treatment of the wheelchair guy spurred the Americans With Disabilities Act, mandating that gals are required to wheel guys away from psychos, as well as making forests more wheelchair accessible. Truth be told, I felt bad for the guy.

I felt bad for Franklin, too. He was a very sympathetic character. But still, I gotta say, if it comes down between the two of them, I'm rooting for Leatherface.
