[MAIN QUEST]
You follow the river upstream, the night getting darker and darker. It was dire time you look for shelter. Running out of the small amount of light left you find there is no shelter on this side of the river. You cross the river, belly deep in water. After exiting the river and shaking off you leave the area, lifting your head up you;
A] Decide to spend the night by the river bank.
B] Decide to spend the night in a nearby cave.
C] Decide to spend the night among the bushes.
Still damp and cold from the frigid river waters, Nova barely had the energy to drag himself along the banks. Eventually he moved away from the river, the only thought penetrating his exhaustion fogged mind was have to get away from the scary things.
He stumbled along as the light faded. In those last few moments between dusk and full night, a patch of deeper darkness caught his attention – a cave, partially hidden behind a patch of bushes. Shaking his head, the young stallion woke himself up just enough to perform a sweep of the area. His ears swiveling at every little noise, he looked around himself for any sign of the creatures that had chased him even past the relative safety of the copse of trees.
The sounds of pursuit had disappeared, and no matter how Nova dug in his recent memories he couldn’t recall the last time he’d actually heard them. It had to be before he’d crossed the river, he was pretty certain…but he couldn’t pin it down exactly. No matter, they weren’t here now and that was the most important thing.
Hopefully, if he was ensconced in the little cave, they wouldn’t come across him in the middle of the night, either. Nova knew how important resting completely was after a harrowing experience such as that one.
Mind made up, the stallion picked his way through the strewn rocks and slipped into the cave. It was even smaller than he expected, very shallow, with barely enough space for him to fit in between the boulders littering the inside.
Once inside, he stood for a long while, just focusing on his breathing until it finally returned to normal. Oh, how he wished he had even just a single friend to depend on – especially on this night. Nova thought longingly of home, his heart squeezing painfully in his chest. His parents would have known what to do, wouldn’t have exhausted themselves unnecessarily as he had. His mother would have kissed him on the forehead, telling him it was all going to be okay, and singing him to sleep against her warm side.
Instead, he was here in this tiny cave, alone. A huge sigh escaped, and Nova sunk shakily to his knees before settling on the ground. He hadn’t slept like this since he’d been a young foal – with his mother and father witchingly safely over him – and knew that it wasn’t the smart thing to do. Those creatures were still out there, and if they hadn’t found something else to satisfy their hunger they’d be searching for him.
An uncontrollable tremor shook through his body, and Nova tucked his head down, curling into an even tighter ball. Right now, all he wanted to do was fall into an exhausted sleep. Hopefully things would look better in the morning.
