As far as the villagers knew, Lump was alone. No family ever came to visit him, he never got any mail from far off places. All he seemed to have was the village and the people in it.

There was never a meeting. No one spoke of it. It was never officially announced. But somehow, they all seemed to decide collectively that the old pug was going to be everyone’s grandpa.

That included making sure he was never alone for holidays, even if he didn’t have a family home to go to. Every year he spent Christmas at a different household. And Thanksgiving too. Every holiday, a different family would welcome him into their homes (or their picnic blankets, or their sleds, etc) and shower him with the love he didn’t get anywhere else.

This year, for Valentine’s Day, he got a little card, from every villager in Lilypad. Each and every one is displayed with pride on a wall in his house.
