Description
Interceptor is another frequent ally and infrequent antagonist of Thunder Woman, a cybernetic "super-cop" for Newport City. She's based on some characters by folks I've seen, including an old character of
, as well as
's cybernetic beauties. Out of all the supporting characters TW has, this is one I think has the most potential to spinoff her own stories. Anyway...
Interceptor was originally Maria Ellis, a cop in the Newport City Police Department. The department was frequently indebted to Thunder Woman for assisting them against villains or saving the city from destruction on numerous occasions. However, even with some other heroes rising up in the city, Thunder Woman's absence thanks to Kelkamith left it vulnerable, and during this time super-crime rose to an unprecedented level. A similar event happened when Thunder Woman was imprisoned for her unsanctioned intervention in the South Ossetia War, and even with the United Nation's official superteam, Interguard, establishing a headquarters in the city, there was no guarantee the foreign heroes would be able to make up for Thunder Woman's absence. As a result, the mayor of Newport City commissioned Duvall Development Incorporated to engineer a "super-cop" for the NPCPD Metahuman Response Unit, to be part of an entire squad of superhuman law enforcement to back up the department and MRU.
Several projects were created within DDI to develop the "super-cop." In charge of one of these projects was Doctor Ruth Sanders, an exceptionally gifted scientist and engineer. Her team of fellow scientists and researchers attempted to create an android and fully-functional AI program, but continual tests were failures, with constant bugs, errors, and limitations. Meanwhile, a rival team was successful in creating a fully robotic unit, and it was feared they would get the job. But when an accident happened with their machine, Ruth's team was ordered to do better.
Meanwhile, Maria Ellis and her unit confronted a human smuggling operation between the supervillain Helreginn and the Russian Mafia in Newport City. When they attempted to intervene, Helreginn turned the tables. Even with their anti-meta gear the police were hopelessly outmatched by the mad scientist, who in a single blast critically wounded Maria. She was rushed to the hospital, but there was limited hope that she could survive.
Ruth Sanders learned about this, and proposed an idea to her team; instead of creating an android and AI from scratch, what about taking an existing person and building from there? They had the equipment to do so, and even had a device designed to scan human minds, originally created for their AI development. But instead of trying to create an AI template, why not instead create an entire copy of a human mind? With no other hope for Maria, the scientists went to work.
The next morning, a simulacrum of Maria Ellis woke up. But she was no longer in her human body. Now she was a robotic entity, albiet a prototype that resembled little more than a metal skeleton filled with wires and motors, and her mind, as a simulacrum of Ellis, was incomplete, deprived of memories or her personality. Ruth promised that she would be made whole again, in mind and body.
Soon after, Maria Ellis was reborn in a brand new body, completely human in appearance and feeling, armed to the teeth with a versatile weapons and defense system. Dr. Ruth gradually helped her develop and mature. She wanted the new super-cop to be human in every way, with her own morality and judgment. Not a merciless robot with a set of directives, but able to think, reason, and even feel emotion. Given a little bit of sex appeal based on the input of Duvall's marketing agency, Interceptor was demonstrated to the board of trustees, and Dredd Duvall himself.
Duvall saw great potential in Interceptor, not just as a superpowered police officer, but as a living weapons system. Secretly, he ordered the project that had created the failed robotic prototype to work with the Interceptor project to create more, ostensibly as cops, but in truth to be sold as super-soldiers to Duvalls clients, among them Chechen terrorists and the Newport City Russian Mafia. This group, enraged at Ruth's success, were all too happy to begin creating what they deemed to be Interceptor's assassin.
Doctor Sanders discovered this directive by Duvall. Fearful that she would expose his operations, Duvall sent the new prototype after Sanders. It killed her, but not before she programmed the final bits of her instructions into the android, teaching her about right and wrong, as well as the information she would need against Duvall. Interceptor confronted the Prototype, destroying it.
Interceptor went on to a long and successful career as Newport City's defender, even alongside the heroine Thunder Woman. When Thunder Woman was seemingly responsible for a rash of crimes, Interceptor helped Samantha track down the real perpetrator, Thunder Slayer, who was trying to discredit the heroine. Of course, this happened only after Interceptor initially tried to arrest Thunder Woman, the android holding her own in battle. In turn, Thunder Woman has returned the favor for Interceptor, helping her in her efforts to expose Dredd Duvall, defeat the Russian Mafia goons, and take down the corrupt development team at DDI, whose efforts spawned a villainous successor to Interceptor, named Interdictor.
Interceptor also works frequently with the United Nations superteam Interguard, and has developed her own rogues gallery of criminal enemies, including cyber-terrorists, robotic weapons, insane AIs, and high-tech thieves. So far, she's proven herself a worthy defender of Newport City, and in Thunder Woman's absence, has been able to hold up her slack.
Interceptor is a cybernetic police officer, built around a versatile gravimetric projector system. These projectors allow her to project and manipulate beams of force, allowing her to levitate and move matter, erect protective barriers, restrain perpetrators, and fire off blasts of force that can vary from explosive bursts to pencil-thin cutting beams. She can vary the intensity and power to levels suitable for whatever threat she encounters, and can even use this system to fly at sub-Mach speeds. She has advanced sensor systems, a holographic projector that she can use to project displays of information or create illusory decoys, ports she can plug into computers or use to wiretap, a built-in repair system, medical kits, hand-cuffs, and even power draining devices to neutralize the powers of superhuman opponents. Lastly, her artificial construction renders her very strong and durable, enough that she can even survive brushes with powerful opponents like Thunder Woman.
