Description     Rare was the phenomenon where a dragon would meet a human and form a connection, whether it was a connection of romantic love or something more parental. Both were strong, and both posed a great danger for the human, bringing them into the ways of life of the dragons that reigned over the highest peaks and air currents.

Such a bond was formed on a new spring day as the king of sorts of the dragons, a huge black scaled dragon by the name of Ronin, sailed over the tops of the trees, hunting for a mid-day snack. Over the sound of the air running over his body, another sound reached him, one he knew well and normally wouldn't think anything of. It was the sound of crying, a little girl, and this time he felt compelled to sink beneath the canopy line of the trees and investigate.

As he sank lower, he saw the source of the crying, his orange cat-like eyes falling upon a small girl, which looked to be no older than seven or eight. The girl was huddled up under a fallen spruce, her small, dirty hands cupping her knee which seemed to be covered in blood. Her hair was a light, golden blonde he could see in the dappled sunlight, her eye color he wasn't sure off while she kept her gaze down. Slowly, the black scaled king made his way toward the tiny human. He felt drawn to her, felt a compassion toward the small child of the humans he usually looked down upon.

A snapping twig had the child's head snapping up, her eyes instantly falling upon the ginormous fire breathing reptile not too far from where she sat. The girl's eyes, he could now see they were a striking mixture of a deep blue and green, widened to the size of saucers as she looked upon him. Undoubtedly, she knew what he was and that he was dangerous. As he predicted, shot up in an attempt to flee, making her way in the opposite direction. She had to get away from this creature, she was told stories of the dragons, of the danger they were. Ronin, however, would have nothing of it, and sent his lethal tail whipping around and crashing to the ground, cutting off the girl's way of escape. This brought a scream of terror from the girl, and sent her stumbling and falling to the forest floor, where she could only sit and tremble in fear.

This pitiful sight sent another, confusing wave of compassion through the dragon's heart. He pondered this a moment as he watched the small human cower in the middle of the ring his body formed, pondered before something snapped together in his mind.

"Oh," He rumbled the exclamation to himself, "I see. How about that?" He couldn't hold back a small chuckle as he realized that this little human girl was his 'charge'.

The sound of the deep voice above her had the child trembling even more, she was terrified. The dragon studied her as she whimpered and shook beneath him. Ever so slowly, he lowered his large, scaled head to her level.

"Easy now," His voice was deep toned, but as gentle as ever as he spoke to the child. "I'm not going to harm you," He promised in the same, soft voice. A small smile spread across the king's face as the young girl looked up, her blue-green eyes looking into his orange, slitted ones. She was still terrified he could see, but he would fix that in time.

"What is your name, young one?" He asked of her.

"E-Emylee," The girl replied, stuttering in her fear.

"Ah, beautiful name," The dragon mused, still keeping his deep voice soft and calm. "My name is Ronin," He introduced himself, bringing his snout even closer to the child.

"Y-you're a dragon," She got out, "Dragons hurt people, my dad said so." Emylee stated in her small, scared voice, but her trembling had lessened.

"That is true," Ronin agreed with the child, "But sometimes our kind forms a bond with your kind." He couldn't help but laugh at the confused look on her face. That was when his keen eyes noticed some abnormal coloring on the child's left eye. Raising his clawed front foot, he gently brushed some hair away from the eye. "Where did you get this bruise?" He rumbled the question at her, keeping his claw on her cheek.

Emylee didn't recoil as the claw brushed her cheek and remained, she couldn't, she was feeling at ease around the dragon. "My dad," She told him, "He hurts me all the time." She said in a matter of fact tone.

This news had smoke curling from Ronin's nostrils and a low growl rumbling in his chest. "Is this why you are out here on your own?" He questioned, trying his best to keep his voice level to save her from anymore terror. Upon her nod, he started to rise, he was mad. Mad that anyone would harm a little girl, his little girl, and think nothing of it.

Emylee stared up at the dragon as he moved with such agitation, she watched, but not in fear. "I never want to go back," Her voice rang out to the dragon king.

"Good," He barked out, whipping his body around and snatching the little girl into his clawed foot. Ever so gently, the great beast lifted the child up and placed her onto his back, just before his wing joints. "Hold on tight." He instructed her.

Doing as she was told, she grabbed a hold of a notch between his scaled, gripping it tight as huge black wings unfurled on either side and began to beat to lift them both into the air. Ronin carried her to his cave, where he would raise her as his own, he adopted her as his daughter, and his heir.

I always like stories where misunderstood creatures are shown in a different light.
