Description the reddish one on the right was my first ring I made last semester for the assignment of making a two layered ring. The bottom layer is sterling silver, and the top is Mokume with copper and silver.

the other ring was made for my boyfriend, and the mokume is made with Shukudo, which is why it\'s a darker color than mine.

I already posted the smaller one before, but decided to get a better photo up.

Ahh I see lol~

My teacher was ranting about how painful it was to make the mokume for his wedding rings and the crazy process it took. Wow at least you found some scraps o.o that stuff's expensive, but I love how it looks! Still good job

How many times did you twist the billet in the first ring before cutting it in half?

I didn't actually make it, it was already cut into a strip when I got it, I just flattened it more for my needs.

well, It was my first semester, you can't expect me to be making my own blocks of mokume when I have other projects to do. The teacher just happened to have some bits and pieces lying around.

I'm not complaining.

Really? Our program is so underfunded, our teachers never have a spare anything to give to students.

What is your program like?

well I suppose it depends on the teacher, too. Our art department seems pretty well off, but the teacher, as well, is really resourceful and has a lot of stuff in his studio and at his house. It's not like he gives stuff out for free, we still pay 150 for the semester as a fee, and the cost of any silver we use on top of that. But all in all, it's a pretty good deal. He sort of thinks of it as "you make something worth it, you've payed for the materials".

$150 per semester?! Geez! We pay closer to $2,000 per semester, AND we have to pay for all of our materials and tools!

wowza, that's intense. This is part of a college art department, though, so a lot of the supplies are provided.

We are also part of the college art department. All of the heavy equipment is already there to use. You have to buy your own hand tools, stones, metals, etc. And we still pay a hell of a lot more then you guys per semester :S What is your school??? Damn, that's crazy...

University of Alaska Fairbanks.

I don't know, maybe it's just a combination of a lot of things, that makes it possible not to pay two arms and a leg to do this. Not complaining though. I love it.

the one that's irregular wasn't hard, just a matter of scratching through it randomly.

the uniform pattern was made that way, so I had the easy route

What's a mokume?

it's like damascus, it's layers of metal, run through a rolling mill to the point where they are practically fused together.
