Merci beaucoup, hope you like. You can see that I did substantial re-draw of sculptural details like the corbels and the side turret, plus I've added some new stuff. Drawing those timber trusses by hand is tricky... Are you doing anything right now with Darkmichael?

I would almost like to combine them, like use my 2D drawing as a wall paper glued to a 3D model. Or? I dunno...

That could be cool. Hand-drawn texture maps for a 3D model.
Or, you could just building the whole thing out of paper and draw/paint directly on it. Because I'm sure you have tons of free time for stuff like that.

I love the hammer beam trusses. I used them in a house I designed a few years back for the great room. The rest of the house was conventional framing.

I was waiting to see who would comment on the trusses! Did I blow it? You think they will stand up to engineering analysis with maybe 8x12 doug fir for the main components? They're not as strong as a simple kingpost truss. I design these buildings as exercises, just a bit of fantasy and letting loose, but I am dead serious about the truss design. Let's build a model!

My best grades in College, and when I got registered was in structural design.
No, you did not blow the truss design, and I like how you've incorporated kickers into the ridge beam (first thing I noticed!) I have seen this type of truss used before, or at least a similar design.
Give me a truss elevation, and I could model it using scale lumber.

Don't tempt me. I already have the rough sketch of the truss, but I didn't post it. I wanted to draw it in maybe 1/8" scale. You build something like this with balsa or basswood?

MrEd301 In reply to Built4ever [2012-12-03 17:07:16 +0000 UTC]
Basswood. My preference is 1/4" scale, my eyes are not as good as they used to be, and 1/8" scale is a little rough..

Yes, making a model is time consuming. 1 to 3 weeks of evenings for me.

You are welcome. Have you thought of designing a circular plan house in the same style you do? Would be interesting to see that.

I know someone who worked for a company not far from here that did circular houses. Those are difficult to design, even more so to build. Do you have a traditional type of house in mind, or modern? Mud huts can be circular, for example. You have to think of it this way: All modern construction materials are subject to what I call a geometric process (circular saw cuts a straight line,) so they are available to us in a rectilinear format. That means it is difficult to build a rounded wall or roof for example. Try hanging a picture on a rounded wall, putting a refrigerator on a rounded wall, building cabinets on a rounded wall. I prefer to use rounded walls for "bump-outs" in a floor plan, or a corner tower, but not the whole house, not as a "real" house plan. One of my very first construction projects involved building a quarter circle wall (for a Starbucks!). We spent five times as much time on that as a straight run. I asked other builders and they estimated that a rounded wall should cost five times as much, AT LEAST!!

No, I meant the planing being more or less circular, that means having straight walls is ok if the shape is octagonal for instance, also towers used to be of circular planing in medieval times. It was just an idea that could be fun for a fantasy themed house design, anyway, thanks for the reply, I totally agree on the points you provided about round walls being not as functional for use.

I'm in progress right now as a commission, see my gallery and find stuff for "The Clove" town. It's a long term project, maybe 50 storefronts. Yes, my main project in life is to design entire towns!
