I like the picture. It gave me a funny idea for a shirt. It will have an alicorn Twilight Sparkle on the front with the words: Haters gonna hate! Seems appropriate seeing as how people are complaining about it.

I get why people are becoming so distraught over Twilight becoming an Alicorn Princess. But you know what? Lauren Faust's intent with the show was to defy stereotypical portrayals of female characters in children's media. Whose to say that the writers, even without Faust, can't do the same for said female characters becoming Princesses?

It would be much easier to defy stereotypical portrayals of females by having her not become a princess in the first place.

CelestialKami-chan In reply to Ganondox [2013-03-07 13:58:05 +0000 UTC]
But wouldn't it make more of an impact to break down stereotypes within the system by representing everything that goes against our perception of princesses?

Ganondox In reply to CelestialKami-chan [2013-03-07 15:34:43 +0000 UTC]
The stereotype is that girls want to become princesses. Let's face it, most girls are not princesses and are never going to be one. This shows that Twilight must aspire to be a princess, not a nerd.

I understand the stigmas associated with princesses in this manner, and you are, of course, entitled to your opinion. If I may, however, I would like to provide my perspective on the situation:
I just think it's too early to decide whether this will be a good thing or bad thing since we have yet to see Twilight actually do anything as a princess yet. Chances are, however, she's not going to just sit in some fancy room being waited on hand and foot while whining about wanting to go to a ball with a prince or some cliche thing like that. Knowing Twilight, she'll be on the front lines helping everypony with their problems, because that's what it means to be a good leader. This is the part of being a princess that society rarely ever emphasizes, and why princesses are often seen as symbols of anti-feminism. The intent of Megan McCarthy and the other Friendship is Magic writers is to emphasize the leadership role that princesses have. Megan McCarthy may have needed to reword her statement of every girl wanting to be a princess, but what she said that, she" was thinking of the princess [she] wanted to be growing up: Princess Leia" (Twitter). Lauren Faust is even more about the character than the title attached to their name as indicated by these tweets:
"I don't have a problem with princesses. I have a problem with lame characters and bad storytelling."
"And nothing wrong with being born or marrying into princesshood, as long as you live up to the duty that comes with it."
For Twilight, being a princess doesn't mean she has to stop being a nerd. She's just applying her studies and magical potential to something that will benefit the greater good of Equestria, which she got to understand through the power of friendship. Princess=leadership position that can be earned in Equestria, and since little girls are likely smart enough to understand the difference between being a princess in the real world and a princess in Equestria, so if anything, the show is encouraging girls to pursue positions of leadership, and we could use some more women in politics. Plus, it's not just Twilight that has to be considered a role model. She may have gained a high position of leadership, but Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash are treated just as equally and are just as prominent in the show. After all, they're the ones that got Twilight to where she is now.
Sorry, I got a little carried away trying to explain my position on the subject. You're still entitled to yours. I just think it would be best to wait until season 4 to still what Twilight is actually going to do as an Alicorn.

It's not a stigma against princesses, it's the fact there is no reason to make her a princess, there is no reason to try to destigmify princesses because actual princesses aren't important. Maybe if Twilight was already a princess it would mean something, but she wasn't. Girls don't need to be thought there is different types of princesses, they need to be taught their are different types of girls and they are all okay. We already have Celestia and Luna, very different characters, we do not need another princess.
"I don't have a problem with princesses. I have a problem with lame characters and bad storytelling."
This change was bad story telling.
