Description
“ALRIGHT STUDENTS, LISTEN UP!” Zagor yelled. All of the fire students were either sitting or standing on the grassy field. Some didn’t want the mud from the spring showers to dirty their legs, and some just didn’t care. Citrine stood, making sure Alyssa was at her side. “I’M TEACHING YOU ALL TONIGHT! First order of business; rollcall! Constantine?”
“Here.” A raspy voice called out in response, sounding rather annoyed.
“Raiden?”
“Um...here!” A voice squeaked out.
The list continued as Zagor called out each name, Citrine responding when she heard her name. Only one fire student was absent. The field grew silent as everyone’s name had been called.
“Hmph. Well, we’re continuing on without them!” Zagor said, putting his clipboard on the wet grass. “While I do lack fire magic knowledge myself, Netty gave me this book to help you all! Now then, turning to the conjure fire page...uhhh...THERE WE ARE! The first step is to…”
Zagor went on to read what the book said, as an attempt to help the fire students understand. It ended up just making everyone slightly confused as Zagor struggled to read some of the bigger words in the book. After Zagor was finished, he had a slight look of triumph. The awkward silence from the crowd greeted him in return.
“U-um..not to be rude Zagor sir...but I didn’t really understand…” A student called out.
“EHHH?? BUT- ugh. Just- concentrate on the fire sticks I provided. Try to make fire.”
“Sure, and we can summon lightning from the sky to strike and light up one of the torches.” A student snickered. A few students laughed at the remark.
“HEY!!”
Citrine stood up after all of the fire students split up with their torches. Alyssa had already ran off to enjoy the scenery, to which Citrine didn’t mind. It was a beautiful afternoon after all, everyone should get to enjoy themselves. After the crowd of fire students dissipated, Citrine walked up to Zagor who had a few sticks left on the tray he was holding. Each fire stick was welded down using either earth magic or by hand, the ones by hand being painfully obvious. They were all topped with a grey cloth. Zagor smiled as Citrine approached, lifting the tray up.
“Heya! Last fire student here, eh? Well, looks like me and Netty made a few too many extra!” He laughed, a loud but contagious laughter. Citrine laughed lightly along as she grabbed one of the fire sticks. She was shaking uncontrollably and she felt like she could fall over at any second. Zagor stopped laughing to have a look of concern on his face. “Hey, are you okay? You look as pale as a ghost!”
Citrine felt herself wobble in place as she tried to keep her balance. She swallowed, her throat feeling dry. “Ah, I’m fine! Just a bit tired is all.”
Zagor still kept looking concerned, but nodded. “Just be sure to rest lots after the after-class party we’re throwing tonight!”
Citrine nodded as she turned to walk away. “Of course!” ‘...of course…’ Citrine thought as she walked over to the other fire students. Everyone else had already lit their torches and set the majority of the poles on fire. Citrine managed to slowly walk over to one of the remaining unlit ones...why was she so slow? She glared at the fire stick in her claws, too tired to be mad. Her thoughts suddenly seemed rather distant as she flared up her magic. She did as Zagor said (or rather, the book he was reading from said), and tried to conjure a small flame. Small sparks appeared where her hand was, and a very small flame appeared in front of her. The warm glow was somehow...unwelcome. Citrine moved the fire stick to the flame as soon as she could, and the light cloth lit up. Citrine let her magic die off as the torch burned brightly. She stared at it, her tired gaze unwavering.
“Hey mom!!” A voice called out to her in the distance. Citrine turned to look. It was her daughter, Alyssa. She was dancing around in the grass, looking very happy. “Come join me!! It’s fun!” Alyssa called out, almost slipping from the mud.
Citrine let out a small chuckle. She loved her daughter very much. It made Citrine happy to see her happy. After Citrine adopted her, she vowed to make her life as happy as possible. She just couldn’t understand how someone could just let go of a child like Alyssa...she was a wonderful child. Her life was so much brighter now that she had Alyssa in it. Citrine knew that giving an orphaned child a parent would be the greatest decision of her life. “I’ll join you in a moment, okay?” Citrine called back.
“Okay!” Alyssa shouted, giggling as one of the other students danced with her in the mud.
Citrine was thankful that most of the students in this class were nice. She had heard stories of horrible students...the last class had someone leave with an injured wing, and another with a burn scar! Everything in this class had been uneventful, which quelled Citrine’s anxiety about forgetting to drop Alyssa off at the Nook. Lost in her thoughts, Citrine didn’t realize she had already walked herself to an unlit pole. Citrine reached up and threw the lit up torch in the cavity before the flame could die out. The material in the cavity lit up immediately, the flames seemingly burning the sky. After doing so, Citrine felt...sick. Very sick. Her head started swimming, the confusion of the world spinning around her making her head hurt even more. Citrine gritted her teeth as a way to try and make herself concentrate and snap out of it, but nothing worked. In a last ditch effort, she put her hand up to her forehead. She was...hot. Burning hot. Why? She wasn’t using fire magic by accident, was she? Citrine didn’t see red in the corners of her vision, so that couldn’t be it…
“Mama? Are you okay?” Alyssa called out, stopping herself from having fun.
Citrine tried to reply, but her throat closed up. Her mouth was so dry…
The last thing Citrine did before everything went black was reach out to her daughter.
The last thing she saw was her daughter running towards her.
A small crowd quickly gathered around Citrine’s body on the ground, confused and concerned. Alyssa was shaking her body, trying to get her mother to wake up. It wasn’t working.
Zagor rushed over and immediately noticed she was burning hot. He quickly used his ice magic as an attempt to cool her off.
“ONE OF YOU, GO FETCH DOCTOR F!”
The dying embers of the poles stopped touching the sky.
The rain came soon after.
