Rory has always prided himself on being original and studious, after growing up with the family he did and not liking what he's seen, he prefers to function(?) along different lines in hopes of distancing himself from their ways. In doing so, he’s molded himself into a young man of high ambitions, who wants to maintain the perfect record so as not to be hindered in his pursuit of a hopefully promising future.
Still, he harbours the will to help guide his fellow students on a path not unlike his own, and is unwavering in his support for their general well being and success throughout the years, even more so now that he’s reaching his finale.
Polite and mature in both speech and mannerisms, yet opinionated and prone to talking in double veiled statements- Rory does not keep his sense of superiority (which he believes is well merited) hidden, but his general presence is neither unkind nor all that threatening.
He has an airy and somewhat melancholic demeanor, with feet that are firmly planted on the ground of realism. His rational and pragmatic mindset grants him the ability to stay on track and focus on the bigger picture. But it's also what keeps him from getting worked up or concerned over the little matters which, incidentally, makes him somewhat apathetic company.
His beliefs and morals are few but strong, making him an easy going conversationalist, but a difficult man to dissuade once he's formulated an opinion or plan of action in whatever project he's perusing. Should there be a difference of opinion, he can disagree politely, but it's highly unlikely he'll compromise, no matter how persuasive an argument you present to him. He's confident in his prior success and believes that if it's a plan he hasn't considered then it wasn't worth looking into. The more you insist, the more Rory plants his feet in the ground (no matter how unreasonable he may appear) as he begins to suspect you're challenging his authority or worse- demoting his intellect.
Rory himself however, has been known to come on strong; boldly prying and challenging people’s beliefs- shaking them up to see what type of character he’s dealing with, regardless of how his target feels. Fortunately, his curiosity is genuine and maturity grants him tolerance for people's outward quirks (i.e. Selfishness/Vanity/Mischief/ etc) as he often judges people based on how their mind works, rather than what sort of person they are.
Although his intentions are to encourage and help motivate students to see their full potential, he'll rarely exercise regret for coming on too harsh or offensive, as those who can't stand up for themselves or to him, truly baffle him.
Because of this, he's developed an aversion towards the timid or shy, both out of mercy and personal disinterest, and is quick to brush them off into the more capable hands of his more empathetic and warm fellow head, Lucille .
On a personal level, Rory battles with his compulsion to work and is most critical of himself over all else; taking on any responsibilities within arm’s length to quench his undying thirst to remain busy. He involves himself in anything that gives him credible social status (though his interests are strictly academic these days- sports and pop culture change far too fast for his liking), especially now that he’s in his senior year.
His strengths lie in establishing order and most activities he partakes in often have the luxury of being enjoyably stress free for others (a legacy he hopes to be remembered for), as he shoulders the nitty-gritty details without rancor but neglects to indulging in the fun himself- subsequently causing him fluctuating stress that he hasn’t quite learned to handle yet.
[History]
Lifestyle and Family
Born and raised in southern Ireland, Rory had a fairly simple childhood. His family, the O’Callaghan’s- had spent years studying both the dark and mystic arts of wizardry to the exclusion of much else. The family dynamic was an old fashioned one- with Elders over a century old, still watching and guiding the younger generations into following their ideology.
They’re a family who prides themselves on their knowledge as well as their reputation for harboring a alleged Seer many years ago- which briefly elevated their family status as somewhat intriguing, and have ever since had keen eyes for the generations after.
They take the mystic arts very seriously, and thus have an awkward relationship with the rest of the wizarding community- as many view them as somewhat foolish and over time a bit too zealous in their beliefs.
Every child, before birth, is named after a naming seer in hopes of some enlightenment to their future. They’re groomed to be clear-minded and level-headed individuals who are taught at a young age to look at all aspects of the world through the various arts of Divination. Despite it's growing redundancy, their hope was that by broadening the minds of such youths- they’d have a higher chance of catching sight of a prophet-to-be within the bloodline.
Such is the case with Rory O’Callaghan, who resided almost exclusively within the confinements of his home, with only an elder brother to play with and two very wishy-washy parents. Their homelife seemed odd on the outside looking in- as they were always trailing behind the modern times and unwilling to have casual relationships with both muggles and other neighboring wizards.
He and his brother Dara, only a year apart were subjected to multiple analysis or constant readings, and were taught per tradition, to utilise the various forms of Divination to come to conclusions. They looked for omens in tea leaves, clouds and smoke, but their results and findings were often cloudy and melancholic- as they discovered more bad outcomes than good. However when things didn't make sense, there was never any discussion as to why- instead they were expected to just accept the 'fate' and continue on- which both boys found difficult.
Rory in particular, didn’t understand or enjoy his home life, and though compliant and interested in the art- he grew wary of how woolly and contradictory it was made to be. Everytime he thought he’d discover something new, more questions would arise but no one seemed interested in answering or investigating further. Things just ‘were’, which he couldn’t submit to, and his mind couldn't quite allow (forever stuck in the 'But why' phase). His behavior was chalked up as being ‘difficult’ which was a punishable offense and gained him no favors with the Elders.
Acceptance and Hogwarts years
Rorys life never really started until he attended Hogwarts, which in itself was a questionable idea as it wasn’t a customary tradition given that several generations before opted to attend smaller, specialised schools. But his parents for once, argued that their son's curiosity might be cured after they learned a bit more about the real world- So, with the promise of continuing their studies in Divination and staying out of trouble, Dara and he were begrudgingly permitted to attend the school.
His first year was just as magical as most 11 year olds would perceive it, and he was overwhelmed(?) by an atmosphere his brother couldn't describe to him.
Since he didn't have to take Divination until his third year, Rory got to experience the joy of learning new things and meeting students with open and warm minds. Over the years he's done his best not to focus entirely on the art- which has put a distance between himself and his family, albeit a mutually bearable one. Instead he’s taken a step further than them, not just specialising in one or two subjects, but gathering as much understanding as he could in all the lessons he was taking.
By his fifth year, sacrifices had to be made, as he approached OWLs and the workload double- but by then he had already understood which subjects he liked and found useful, and focused his energy and time on them.
His general aptitude as a student has not been all that amazing in his opinion, and it’s thanks to his competitive housemates and peers who’ve kept him on his toes that he could be considered astute. Despite not being consecutively placed in the top of his class- he grew into a promising student, always handed his work in on time, a generally pleasant nature and a considerably hard worker, which he supposes is why he has the honor of serving as the Head boy this year (a feat he’s still questioning but it looks good on a resume so thankyou headmaster).
