Description Something for you all to enjoy. But first, a headcanon.

"Due to the exponential demands of the cult following gained by the famed 'jealous sprite' incident that swept through the internet forums like wildfire and the chance to make a great profit, the developers at Tobikomi decided to finally rerelease Turbotime back into arcades for the first time in close to twenty years since its discontinuation. Not only that, an application would also available for download on any digital media available as a sort of 30th anniversary tribute to the game's inception. The rerelease for both arcade and app would include not just the original racing track, but other mini games like racetrack demolition, beat the clock pit crew, gasoline chemistry and even a series of obstacle courses, with new limited edition courses available each week for download for 50 cents extra at the time of initial purchase. A story mode even entered the gameplay, but all of the high scores had to be beaten and all of the tracks cleared in order to unlock it. Also, as an added bonus, the commercial arcade consoles would act like download stations for portable electronic devices. Anytime someone who had the Turbotime game downloaded onto their phone, tablet or portable game console passed by a Turbotime arcade unit, both systems would exchange information and grace both portable and commercial consoles with new content, new scores and new tracks, in order to keep the game fresh and fun and to really connect the gamers with the gameplay.

However, early on into the development of this grand moneymaking endeavor, the programmers hit a snag. As with many other games that have been rereleased, it was the intention of the programmers to enhance the graphics of the original and thus remaster it in order to expand their demographic to more than just the nostalgia crowd. But, as silly as it sounds, the game's code template just would not cooperate. Any type of remastering attempts, like clearing up the graphics, adding more colors or even trying to change the clarity on the sprite always resulted in the game stalling, the Turbo avatar seemingly 'refuse' to be driven, or even the whole game would revert back to the start screen. One developer swore that when he'd tinkered with the mechanics so the game's sprite was forced to comply with the controls, instead of showing his signature thumbs up and grinning at the end of the race when he'd won, the Turbo sprite had instead scowled and flashed a very rude hand gesture.

At that point, the other developers told him to go home and to stop drinking so much caffeine for breakfast.

Eventually, the production team gave up. It seemed that no matter they tried, the game would not have anything to do with being remastered, even to the point of crashing on purpose, though for the reason it did was anyone's guess.

It was probably for the best, though. The only people who would be interested in the archaic pile of code that was Turbotime would be the cult fanatics and the conspiracy theorists and the game probably wouldn't have made the transition to HD well.

That, and the original sprite was terrifying.

All was almost given up on until one of the programmers came up with an idea. Instead of releasing a remastered version of the original, creating a sequel with the same name would be a much better use of their time and energy.

Yes, they'd promised a remastered release to the masses at the game conference the spring before, but the original Turbotime had been discontinued from production in the early nineties' anyway. No one would know the difference. So they quickly set to work at creating the brand new sequel that would take over as sort of a vengeful tribute to the cantankerous old game that wouldn't cooperate in the first place.

Other than the ones they'd already promised the masses, and more importantly, the stock holders, the developers did try to stay true to a good portion of the gameplay. Though, if they were to remake the game, certain changes had to be made in order to make the game palatable, specifically in the terms of Turbo's appearance. The old design of the sprites, especially Turbo, inside Turbotime were... well, for lack of a better word, downright nightmare fuel. So, some favors called in, specifically to the department down the hall, and with their help, grudging as it was, a new set of designs were drafted and put into creation.

Cuter, smaller, younger characters that greatly resembled those of Sugar Rush were put into the place of the haunting glare of the original's game over placard, and by the time the game finished completion, each of the racers had their own personality, appearance, strengths, weaknesses and backstories, despite there being one lead character and three side characters. While they did share strong resemblances to the SR sprites, the new creations were slightly older, ten instead of nine and two inches taller, and kept the same coloration of the skin and eyes of the original's design, along with the same racing suits and helmets. So, while many in the building of Tobikomi figured that the programmers were preemptively covering their own rears should anyone cause a ruckus, no one could call them on not being authentic-ish towards their muse and praised one another on their reinvention.

Though, they made sure that this batch did in fact have eyebrows.

Despite the trouble that the original program had given them during the early stages of development, the programmers kept many of the original traits of the lead sprite that were displayed in the gameplay and even went so far as to include some of the original code within the new lead as a sort of a tribute. It was probably a sentimental gesture on their part more than anything else, since it was the 30th anniversary and all. However, in order to make sure their sentimentality would not become a hazard to the game, and thus a potential lawsuit, a failsafe was also installed, just in case the Turbo sprite decided to 'act up'. Whether or not that would come back to bite them later would be anyone's guess."

"Thus in 2011, Turbotime X was born, ready to be shipped out and mass produced in both digital and physical form."

End headcanon.

I've seen App!Turbo be a teen, or an adult, or even an age that I can't even tell. But in my head canon, he's ten. I think it has something to do with the whole downloadable into the phone thing.

He's travel sized for our convenience.

AHHH THE BABIES. This is the most adorable thing I've ever seen I just..asdfgfldldj. XD I love how you gave them each thier own unique personalities. I think my favorite is the one on the left which I think is the green one, is it? You just made me really love the other app Turbos I wasn't particularly attached to them before just Turbo and the twins but this changes everything. I ADORE THIS.

Thank you so much! Yeah, the cranky one on the left is the green one and he does not like having his picture taken, hence the extra cranky. In his view, it wastes valuable time he could be using doing other, more productive things, like working in his gasoline lab, or trying to fix the contraption that looks like a boiler in the basement. In my headcanon, all of the racers are masters of ceremonies of their own personal minigames within the game, and while Turbo JX is still the head character around, it gives them some purpose and a sense of relevance. Mind, the avatars act more like instruction guides and the players do all the work, but they all have their moment to shine, so to speak.

I'm planning on drawing more of them so I can expound on their personalities just that much more, so I'm glad you liked them. I couldn't help but notice that while the original twins got a lot of love, and that's good because let's face it, they do need some attention, the app racers were going by unnoticed and I thought that was a waste of a perfectly good opportunity. So, I started drawing and before I knew it, I'd even written a long winded head canon to go with it. And after they ended up being adorable, sugar rush- esque characters, well... let's just say they're probably going to show up again soon.

AWWWWWW all these headcanons accepted!
Do you have different in game hobbies for all of the Turbabies?
I'll never be able to look at these guys the same way again. X3

Oh I'm so excited to see it then. And I completely agree with you the Twins have one second of screentime and they get lots of love, so why not these guys too. <3 XD Well, I've actually started seeing some app Turbo drawings but not too many.

Thank you so much! Yes, they do all have their own in game hobbies that keep them busy when the arcade's closed and likes and dislikes and what have you. I'm still working out the kinks, but when I'm done, they'll all have different personalities, hobbies and occupational assignments. And, because of their multiplayer purposes, I'm putting them in rank like that of a multiplayer game would by directing their rank by color, just like in Mario. So, it'd be Red (Turbo JX), Green, Blue, and then Yellow at the bottom rank.

That's great! I've seen a few app! drawings as well, but normally they're adults or at least bigger renditions of teenagers. Actually, I think most of the app!Turbo drawings depict him as bigger than first Gen. Turbo, not smaller and compact like my little guys.

Headcanon: I'd say that if we went by height alone, Turbo JX would be about half a head shorter than first Gen. Turbo, so a little bit bigger than a SR racer, but not by much. The same goes for the other little guys too.

I can't wait to read all this information this sounds so awesome. :'D So Green would be Player 2 and so on? You're making me want this game designed right now.

Awwwwww and since it's possible that both games are made by Tobikami there could be some similarities between them. :3

BuzzingB In reply to Nyaki-chan [2013-04-02 04:02:01 +0000 UTC]

:'D Yeah, Green would be player 2, Blue would be player 3 and poor sweet little Yellow would be player 4. I swear, he doesn't get nearly enough attention. X'D Ooh, I'd love to play a game like that, it sounds like so much fun.

Oh, more than definitely there would be similarities. In my headcanon, since the programmers of TTX dragooned the help of the SR developers from down the hall by calling in several dozen favors, the overall controls and gameplay, not to mention character design, would be greatly similar, though not so much that they'd get sued. X'D

Nyaki-chan In reply to BuzzingB [2013-04-02 23:29:48 +0000 UTC]

That was so clever to make yellow Player 4 and having him be the shy one who gets the least attention, while Green seems like he'd be the fiercest competitor next to Turbo. X3

Oh my gosh I absolutely love that headcanon! I think it's awesome to have these ideas outside of the games and what goes into them. With this setup and characters I could seriously see this being a great fanfic. :'D

BuzzingB In reply to Nyaki-chan [2013-04-03 21:41:03 +0000 UTC]

:3 I thought it would make sense, if the players went from top to bottom in competitiveness along with rank. Turbo's tops when it comes to competition, green's right behind him, though he sometimes doesn't necessarily feel like it, so slacks off a bit in the pursuits of other things, Yellow's a shy little guy who doesn't normally race all that much, unless as an NPC and Blue... well... Blue just likes to blow stuff up.

How did you know? I've actually been seriously considering writing one for a while, but only recently have I started working on it. It's like you got internet ESP.

D'awwwww I'm really starting to like yellow now! He blows stuff up? :'D Ok this needs to a fanfiction...wait..what?? :0

Are you serious?

Oh my gosh I feel like I've been doing this a lot over the Internet lately. X'D What is this? I'm scared of myself.

But since you are I am so so excited this would make the coolest and really original fanfic. I can't wait.

BuzzingB In reply to Nyaki-chan [2013-04-04 02:58:34 +0000 UTC]

The more I develop him, the cuter he gets, I swear. Yeah, Blue likes to explode things. It's part of the territory that comes with the 'Demolition Derby' game option that he's in charge of running.

Really? Hm... I was doing the same thing, though in a different context, earlier, so maybe it's the power of Deviantart seeping through and flexing its wings, so to speak.

Aww, thank you! It'll be a while before it's ready, and I figure out where I want to go with it, but as soon as it's partially done, I'll upload it.

Nyaki-chan In reply to BuzzingB [2013-04-04 15:22:37 +0000 UTC]

Why can't the app be like this? X'D Funnily enough I can really see him running the Demolitian Derby, just something about his lax calm expression seems to give off the impression that he secretly loves to blow things up and do other dangerous things. X'D

Really I think so too! XD For sure but when you do I will be the most excited happy person.

BuzzingB In reply to Nyaki-chan [2013-04-07 01:53:02 +0000 UTC]

X'D I don't know, but I wish it was. Maybe all of my headcanon wouldn't be contained in an iPhone or something. X'DD I can barely keep it all inside my head, hence the doodles and such. Yeah, Blue is a really calm, laid-back, deadpan little guy, but he is a pyrotechnics expert with a penchant for firework displays, and can get a bit carried away, to the mild annoyance of Green, the panic ridden anxiety of Yellow and the amusement of Turbo JX. And when he's not doing that, he's either reading, building new materials for blowing up or eating fritos. He also writes poetry, though it's really, REALLY bad.

Aww, thank you! It's that the kind of reaction that fuels my motivation to work on it more.

I don't think it could its far too complex.
Awwww Blue's adorable. I love these little quirks you give him like the fritos and bad poetry. What does Green do in his spare time? X3

Oh yeah you have no idea, I'm so invested in the characters, just because thier all so unique and interesting, and I love thier personalities and all these little hobbies and facts about them. :'3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BuzzingB In reply to Nyaki-chan [2013-04-11 06:48:07 +0000 UTC]

I suppose not. Though, I did find out recently that Phoenix Wright was available for download for the iPhone, so maybe in a few years, something that complex may be able to be supported on a phone. X'D

X3 Green's life is his work, in a nutshell. During the open hours of the arcade, he can be found skulking around in his gasoline lab, working on various projects and waiting for the indication that his mini-game has been selected. Though, whether or not he's picked is of little consequence. He figures that he can get much more done if he's not bothered than if a bunch of gamers run amok in the place and decide to destroy it due to inexperience with the mini-gameplay or just general incompetence.

The cleanup alone is enough to tear one's hair out.

However, in the off hours, he usually... spends even more time haunting his lab. But, when having been dragged out by the back of his jumpsuit and forced to, in Turbo JX's words, 'socialize with us lesser beings', he either spends his time reading up on some research texts, collecting samples of just about anything and everything to take back into his lab so he can pull it apart and figure out what it's composed of, (like a grey little magpie), engaging in verbal sparing with Turbo JX, because they're both very fond of quick witted sarcastic conversation matches, trying to fix the wifi connection in the basement or figuring out how far he can fling Yellow in Blue's catapult.

So far he's gotten over 150 yards and it would've been farther if that wall hadn't been there to stop him.

Personality wise, he is a fierce competitor on and off the track and does enjoy emerging victorious, but he does not have nearly the amount of love for the spotlight as Turbo JX does. In fact, he'd much rather avoid that whole thing, because it's awkward and he hates that much attention where he's expected to actually do something for the entertainment of the gamers. Attention he could deal with, but impromptu entertainment? Not so much. He's not the most social of Turbutterflies. It's not he can't manage being in a social situation if he works at it, (and doesn't talk to anyone just in case his sarcastic, sardonic nature runs away with him because someone was stupid in his vicinity) but he just prefers to not because it's really too much effort for not enough payback. If someone made it worth his while, he'd give it probably more than just a sparse glance.

That... and he doesn't know how to really do small talk. He's an incredibly smart guy, a genius in fact, but as for social graces... he's severely lacking in the tact department. Though, he's yet to emulate Blue and get frito crumbs all over the inside of the kart seats just because he was too lazy to get out of his kart for his snack break. His lab might be a royal mess and resemble a trash heap instead of a lab with the amount of rubbish, papers and experiments set up all over the place, but no one has ever sat in his lab and made a 'CRUNCH' noise that resulted in a false start of the race and caused Turbo JX to laugh so hard he fell out of his kart and almost got run over.

That was the last time Blue ever got to use Green's kart. For ANYTHING.

Also, when he looks at someone and it looks like he's glaring, don't take it personally. A great deal of the time, he doesn't even know he's doing it. He's just thinking really hard about things in his head to notice.
