Description This is the first illustration for my serialized story The Lair of the Clockwork Book, which began its run this week at Thrilling Tales of the Downright Unusual ( [link] ). The story updates with a new illustrated page each Monday and Thursday, and will run for fourteen months there.

It's a linear, serialized story meant to complement the branching stories like Trapped in the Tower of the Brain Thieves.

On this first page we see a view over the city of Retropolis - just so we know where we are, here in the retro future - as we consider that there are some places in every city where people just don't go, and we explore the reasons why that's true.

I want to retire here. A small book shop, with a cat, and yellowed slide rules in a glass case beneath the register. And the sound of rockets overhead every day.

I'll do a set of desktop wallpapers eventually, like I did for "Trapped in the Tower of the Brain Thieves" - [link] - but that'll need to wait until most of the illustrations are done. (I've done 33 so far, out of about 120.)

Wow that's a lot of detail.
I love the variety in the achitecture of the buildings,
far too often when you see 3D renderings of a city the buildings are basically copies of one another with different textures and scale settings.
Not an issue here.

BWS In reply to Scorpion451 [2011-02-10 14:51:44 +0000 UTC]

There are really three different classes of building in there, depending on how close they are to the camera, to make you *think* that without slowing down the rendering. Well, slowing it down more, anyway . And before you ask, no, I don't remember how long it took - I was able to turn off ray tracing for this one, which sped it up a bit.
