Wow! That is incredible! Having spent a few hours in Blender myself I think I know what it took to get that so life-like.  And that you could do it is inspiring to me to not give in when frustrated.

Hey - thanks heaps!  Ive found that even a simple looking scene can take a lot of trial and error to get right, especially with the textures.  Im starting to feel fairly comfortable in the node editor now which is really helping move things along.

Ah, the node editor!  I wish I could find a book (I'd pay for it!) that takes a look at each connector in each node and discusses the implications of hooking up that connector to other connectors on other nodes.  I love coming across YouTubes where someone is showing how to achieve an overall affect and they do so in part by hooking up connector foo from node bar to the color input of ... but you come away with a sense of "how long did it take him/her to discover that?"

Okay, maybe a website would be more practical.  And maybe once I buy a lottery ticket and that ticket wins, I'll be free to spend my time working on such a website.

Until then I'll just appreciate the work by folks like you!!

Yeah, it would be nice if it was all laid out neatly and explained somewhere (the official docs probably do).  But, I too am starting to realise that some nodes are very dependent on what comes before it, as to how they affect parts that flow on to other nodes.  Its great for flexibility but a bit mind bending to get figured out (Im still a newbie at it for sure).

Im a big fan of people explaining how things work in the node editor too.  I rekon the people doing the tutorials have spent a *lot* of time experimenting, and have a lot of practice under their belts.

Ive probably mentioned before, but I highly reccomend Andrew Price's tutorials.  He gives pretty good explanations of things and the tutorials produce some excellent results.  Have a look @ www.blenderguru.com/tutorials/

One trick I find handy to learn how a node or set of nodes looks / affects the rest, is to disconnect the final node from the Material Output, then directly attach the node you are curious about to the Material Output, and you can see how it looks.  If that makes sense...  It helps me to learn how a node chunk is working.

Ive seen some really complex textures, but mine are relatively simple (so far )  If you ever want to see the node setup for any of my textures, Im more than happy to share.

I like to watch Andrew Price's just to listen to his accent!  Thanks for the sharing offer -- and vice versa: I tend to take screen shots of my node setup and title the screen shot by what I was trying to achieve.  I just don't get to spend as much time in Blender as I wish I could.  I tend to do mechanical objects animated in 3D with camera and light movements.  The only figures I could put to a walk cycle would be stick figures!  That said, I always strive for photo-realism, which is why I appreciate the work you're doing.

Very good material.  They seem not so to be round, but most of all a great render.

Hehe, thanks, been a combo of things that are helping me get some better textures - www.cgtextures.com for  the floor (great free source material in general), Gimp for creating the scratched / imperfections on the marble surfaces, and MindTex (cheap windows app) to create the bump / spec / etc images

I like it. The marbles look a little square-ish though.
