When the world was still young, this world that we know and the underworld were in harmony. We mortals lived side by side with the immortals of the other world. But greed leads to crime, and after the bloodbath, a seal was made to keep the human world and the underworld apart. Over the entrance to that strange, other world, there lies a massive stone, impossible to move by mere humans, to eternally guard the passage. Beneath waits the Gatekeeper, holding the key to the human world.
And if one can stay and listen, one can still here the whispers from the underworld..."

My entry for the "Myths of my hometown" contest over at
The idea of the contest was to make up a myth to explain something odd in your hometown.
The inspiration for this piece comes from my childhood.
When I was a kid, me, my siblings and sometimes a few other kids from the neighbourhood used to play at a small rock surrounded by some bushes. On this rock, there stood a big boulder. We used to imagine that we heard voices from below, and many times we tried to move it with all our forces, but whatever we did, we could not move it. Some of us believed there was a treasure there, others that there was a ghost, but I like to believe there was a gate to the underworld

Is the gatekeeper good or evil? Will she open the gate? Does she want to reach out to the girl?
Well, who knows?

This was a very experimental piece where I played a lot with brushes. Sketched from scratch in Photoshop, no references used.
Had to rush it a little to get it done in time for the deadline. Hope you'll like it anyways ^^
