Description the man says: "Oh, my hat!"
the woman says: "Oh, my cat!"

This painting started off with a good idea, then I ruined it, and then I managed to make it ok. I'm not 100% happy with the results, but I think it's good enough to go into my portfolio, that i'll soon be submitting to book editors.
gosh the scanner screwed it all...
* Constructive criticism please*

thank you

I really like it. Though its not mm how can I say, it doesnt look like a perfectionist professional illustration, i like the freshness, the movement and that color that has something melancholic in it. It could perfectly illustrate a children book, it has a romanticism in it, i really like it they way it is, wouldnt change anything I see onyl one mistake, the flowers fly to one side as the umbrella does, so the cat should be on the right side of the girl not on the left side. I really like it

The details are wonderful, and your illustration style is adorable! I like how the character's positions seem to "flow" from one to the other. Oh, and I love the way the cat looks too!

Very charming! I have seen many storybooks with much more inferior illustrations. I've seen books with illustrations that were so poorly done that I honestly don't think young children could tell what was going on in them. This one however seems to have great focus, you can tell what everything is and what is happening. I like all of the amazing details...such as the furniture in her window, and the squirrel playing in the tree. I think it is a drawing that would entertain children and adults alike.

It's beautiful, but I can't help wishing the man's expression was more worried, or at least his body language was more expressive, like the woman's.

Glad you managed to fix it, that's my biggest obstacle in painting watercolours. I'm always afraid of screwing things up.

I think the most important thing about a piece (and particually storybook illustration) is its charm, and this has a LOT of it! I think it's beautiful, keep up the good work!
If you're not 100% happy with it, have you thought about redoing it? You have a lot of points to take on board now from these comments, and it might be beneficial to be able to show how you can present a piece, receive constructive critisism, and then improve, as this is an important part of book development!

i was gonna say, before i read your comment, "that looks like a storybook illustration" but i see that's just what it is... um, well, good job then, it's spot on, and the little story makes it very amusing. i keep meaning to do more of these myself, done a couple but it's a bit more of a pain to do a whole storybook than i realized when i began, still haven't finished the one i started for my niece like 5 years ago. i should just put everything aside and finish it up, she won't be a kid much longer *sigh*. my constructive criticism: while the drawing overall is excellent, technical quality beyond what i see in most storybooks, attention is not focused immediately on the cat with the umbrella. i looked for it after i read the text actually. i find i'm drawn to the line between the man and the woman, because they're human and i was wondering what the interaction between them was. my only suggestion would be to put it on just a bit bigger piece of paper, and make the cat closer to the center, with just background filling the extra space, then the viewer would be drawn to see the cat more immediately. as it is, i think, besides that they're people and the viewer is probably a person too, that the axis between the woman and the man is along the main diagonal of the image makes it pretty compelling for the attention, while if it was off center to the lower left even just a bit, it would not be so much.

Actually, the cat was more of a secondary component of the painting, the main ones being the man and the woman. You are right, I should've postioned them differently, since there isn't any interaction between them.
Thank you very much for the criticism
I know that it's got technical issues but I'm working hard!!

misterwackydoodle In reply to c-osmos [2011-11-02 03:06:08 +0000 UTC]

but the cat with an umbrella is so uber! and kitty cats are always playing with things they shouldn't and getting into trouble. i wouldn't even call it a technical issue, your skills are impressive. kids also see things totally differently than adults do, they'd probably be oblivious to what the adults were doing and the interaction between them, so having the cat there might work perfectly for a kids book, then put the text to draw interest down and away from the fascinating kitty to the dull and boring grownups. i was reading books to my nieces and nephew just recently and noticing what i just mentioned, how differently they see the story in the illustrations.

The illustration looks very defined, like it has a style of its own, and I like that. Not sure how much I can concrit this, other than on the use of colour (in which I notice you mention that in a comment previously) so there isn't much to be said. Good luck in your interview/portfolio review with the publishers!
